Can MLB force Loria to spend on players (again)?

08:09 AM ET 01.22 | The Marlins are set to run a little leaner in 2013 -- perhaps too lean for some. The 2013 payroll projects to $32.5 million, but it's $45 million counting money they owe other teams from salary-dumping trades. An MLB Players Association source said if owner Jeffrey Loria doesn't increase their payroll in the coming months, they plan to pursue the issue with commissioner Bud Selig. "We don't have to wait until next October to pursue it," the source said. If the Marlins don't raise payroll in 2013, former commissioner Fay Vincent expects "the commissioner and union will strongly encourage Loria to spend some money. They can make it very uncomfortable if he doesn't." In 2010, the MLBPA forced an agreement with MLB that required the Marlins to boost their payroll.

loria knew that his albastros dumping salary would bring him some trouble, except that he didn't expected anything to be too sooner,,, should the 29 teams push him even harder to the edge of a cliff??

The NHL system is far from perfect but I like the concept of a salary floor! Wonder if MLB would ever agree to that.

The fans could do that if they wanted to. Just don't show up. In droves. I'm talking total boycott. Empty freakin' stadium.

Baseball just needs to let Loria alone, because attendance will be down, and he will lose money, and soon afterwards maybe he will sell the team.

The Astros need to spend some money as well. I believe the Astros have to lowest pay roll in the MLB.

Astros have so many issues they are better off spending money in the draft and foreign born kids with high upside. Last thing they should do is sign a free agent that requires a draft pick as compensation.
