Cards may not grant Beltran's wish

08:10 AM ET 01.22 | Entering the final season of his two-year deal with the Cardinals, veteran Carlos Beltran understands the position he's in. While the Cardinals would welcome the opportunity to retain someone with Beltran's production potential, several factors will influence the team's level of interest in making a serious run at re-signing him. One of those is Oscar Taveras, the Cardinals' unanimous top prospect and MLB.com's overall 12th-ranked prospect. Likely to begin the year in Triple-A, Taveras is projected as being ready to start the 2014 season in the Cardinals' outfield. With Matt Holliday and Jon Jay under contract for several more years, Taveras would seem the natural fit to replace an outgoing Beltran.

Not a chance that they'll extend him right now. They will want to see how much it is going to take to sign Wainwright, see if Beltran stays healthy this year, and see what kind of year Taveras is having before they even think about Beltran in 2014.

Yeah, with his age and injury history, he's a gamble.

beltran is good now while playing in his last contract year, but the cards shouldn't take any consideration in extending him a new contract at all,,

the cards have plenty top prospects in their minors and unless next winter are good top free agent players , the cards always could bring better players into this organization through the free market,,,

the cards are smart enough, should they resign wainwright to a long term?? i wouldn't do it because the pitcher still has not proved his injury free situation though,,,,

the cards would need to put all the rookie pitchers under pitching count IF they want to avoid injuries regression though,,,

Beltran is Good Player, but he would cost The Cards a lot of money to extend him, like Ichero he might have to go year to year, first year maybe 2 years with another club!

Everything depends on how Taveras progresses this year. Should he tear up AAA the way he did AA, then Beltran is gone. Should Taveras regress, Beltran will get at least one more year with the Cardinals.

Beltran has as much chance as I do in playing for the Cards in14. You have forgotten about Adams who could play first and move Craig to right if Taveras has a bad year playing close to Beale Street.

Beltran better be thinking about where he wants to play next year...or perhaps even be traded to in July.

My only question is if this new wonder is as good in the bigs as in the minors we will have to see You can't just give up on Beltran if you do NOT have a proven player. Beltram can play and if healthy at end of year you have to at least try to resign him

I get the feeling they are viewing Adams as trade bait more than as a future Cardinal starter. He doesn't seem to be in the long term plans. It wouldn't surprise me if he's dealt for a proven middle infielder this year.

I completely agree. Adams is a better fit in the AL as well. Ultimately I see the Cards standing as they are now and reacting to how Taveras responds in AAA. I also would not underestimate the possibility that if he plays well in the first half at AAA they could bring him up. I really like Craig and Beltran but when was the last year they both made it through a season without spending some time on the DL?
Ultimately unless the Cards get blown away with a trade offer for Beltran I think they just have him play out the year and if they want him for '14 make an offer after the year is out.
