08:11 AM ET 01.22 | No doubt, Felix Hernandez has earned what's coming to him. The Seattle Mariners continue to talk to Hernandez about an extension, according to major-league sources. And while no deal is close, the Mariners are at least weighing a four-year, $100 million proposal, sources said. It is not known whether the Mariners actually have made Hernandez such an offer; one source described the two sides as "dancing" but not deeply engaged. But a $100 million extension added to the final two years of Hernandez's current contract would amount to six years, $139.5 million. ... The biggest problem with a four-year extension for Hernandez is that he probably would want a longer deal. He would be a free agent at 32 if he accepted such an offer, possibly past his prime.

Take the 4 year $100M extension Felix, you have already thrown over 1600 innings in your career to date. That arm isn't going to last forever with that workload. At 32 years old, if you are still going strong, then you'll get more, if not you still would have earned over $180M in your career up to that point.

Dancing but not deeply engaged? Does that mean no tongue?

hehehe, there has to be some type of a tune in this dance, but the mariners should lock hernandez to a least 5 years extension that would be more than good news for hernandez,,

the mariners should built pitching around hernandez, felix as mariners ace its a comodity that not too many teams have,,

If he waits 2 years and hits the FA market he'll get way more than that. M's need to go 6-7 years on that extension if they want to get in the zone that he'll get on the open market. I mean look at what Greinke got.

four years extension its not bad at all, after his contract expires then he still could grasp another deal for another 3 years or so,,,for more money or depending how well his arm its holding up,,,

greinke its greinke, hernandez would like to feel confortable while he is at the mound, now the only team WHO could offer him such amount of years and that kind of money,,,would be the free expenders DODGERS,, because yankees are out of the picture,,,,,

right now,,both sides would win, the mariners and felix hernandez, but if felix is asking for a 6 years extension and the mariners refuse to agree with his demands, likely be free agent and dodgers surely would sign him to a mega deal,,,

Agreed. This is in Felix's best interest. That pistol only has so many bullets in the magazine, and Felix has been firing a lot of bullets already. Take the guaranteed money - enough for any reasonable human - and enjoy your next 4 years.

the braves would gladly sign him as a free agent, or shouldn't they??
aside from the braves the dodgers could be a top bidding team for hernandez as a free agent,,the yankees?? doubtfull!!

Here in Seattle the main concern is that Felix will be gone by the time the rest of the team's prospects are major league ready. There's no way this team contends before 2014, and may even be sold by then. They'll need an ace like Felix (if) when that time comes. For now, he's the only reason to tune in to a Mariners game every five days.

Seattle lost one of the faces of the franchise when they let Ichiro go.
You just never know how things will evolve. Schilling's arm managed to last a long time. Pedro's arm lasted long enough for him at least to be a contributor to the 2004 WS championship. The problem with having too many superstars on your team is that they'll be seeking their market value as soon as they are able, thereby putting a crimp on the payroll. Thus it's good to have a handful of really good players, and hope they can lead a team of promising prospects through a good and entertaining season.

You are delusional. If Felix hits the market, the Yankees will be all in. You have got to be kidding yourself to think otherwise. The Mariners need to offer him 6+ years on any extension.
Yeah his arm might blow out, or he might win 6 Cy Youngs. Everything is a risk. Felix has proven himself and has shown himself to be loyal to the Mariners, even though they've been terrible his entire career. He deserves to be rewarded handsomely.

If that happens, I think most every team would be all in.
