08:21 AM ET 01.22 | There's a new sheriff in town, and he likes his shootouts just fine, thank you. Enter Ralph Krueger. During the six day so-called training camp, the new Edmonton Oilers head coach telegraphed that he had a plan to make shootouts a much-more coached part of proceedings than it has been here in the past. ... The Oilers won only 11 of 33 shootouts in [Tom Renney's] two years of picking the shootout shooters. "We see shootouts as a specialty team," said Krueger. "We have a power play. We have penalty killing. And we have penalty shots in the shootout." After the first game, the power play is 25%, the penalty killing is 100% and the shootout is 100%. "This year we're taking the penalty shooting part of the game very seriously," said Krueger.

like almost every team in the league. the minute you get to the final 5 mins of regulation and the game is tied, both teams shut it down and play for the free point. Then, once in overtime, most team's don't take any actual chances unless on a pp.
Make a victory 3 points, an ot victory 2 points, you'd see alot more teams puching for the W because it'd let them put serious distance versus rivals. Of course, this will never happen since it would destroy their wonderful 'parity', we'd no longer have half the league in contention for the 8th spot on the last day.

I was just fooling around with numbers, and I go to thinking;
2 teams play 80 times. Team A wins 65% of the games, but all in OT or shootout. Team B wins the other 35% of games outright. Team A ends up with 104 pts. Despite only winning 28 of 80 games, Team B ends up with 108 points.
This is ridiculous.
