08:04 AM ET 01.23 | Three -- Jarrod Saltalmacchia, David Ross and Ryan Lavarnway -- may be a crowd behind the plate in Boston. So, where does that leave the starter of a season ago, Saltalmacchia? He is heading into what would be perceived as the prime of his career at 27-years-old, and will become eligible for free agency following the upcoming season. Saltalamacchia is also fresh off showing the kind of power (25 homers) most teams drool over when trying to lock in backstops. According to Saltalmacchia, little has changed. At no point this offseason has he been asked to break out a first baseman???s glove for spring training. "I haven???t had any conversations about first base," he said by phone from his Florida home. Catching, he reiterates, is still his thing.

somebody is needing a tough catcher and the yanks would love to trade for Saltalamacchia,
but should the red sox trade him to his rivals in their own division? or should they use a third team as a transfer??

The Yanks, if they are truly interested, will wait until he hits free agency.

If your big and slow, why wait for the team to ask you to work out at first base? Get a glove and spend some time on it now before you're asked. Be ready.

When are the folks at WEEI going to learn how to spell Saltalamacchia? It's not like you know nothing about the Red Sox. Dave and Joe are shaking their heads.

Somebody please install the Red Sox update of SpellCheck on Rob Bradford's computer.

The mind wanders... How would Rob have mangled Yastrzemski?

This Story has been around the block more than a couple of times since they signed Ross back in November...

Not exactly groundbreaking stuff out of WEEI.

Isn't it possible that the Sox will wait to see if Lavarnway can hit MLB pitching before trading Salty?

January 23, 2013  06:33 PM ET

Why bother working out at first base? He barely has the offense to be a catcher. I can't see anyone using him at an offensive position like first base. He either catches or he's out.

I would think so. My guess would be Salty, but I think Lavarnway might be a better choice...to Tampa for a young pitcher?

There are always a few teams that need a catcher. Sox will need to deal one. Would be nice if they got a SP in return. I'm skeptical.

wiseup: Why did Boston aquireall these catchers? They created this controversy themselves, unless they were planning on trading saltamacchia from the start' or playing one of them at first base.
