Tortorella: Rangers lack mental toughness

08:15 AM ET 01.23 | Only two games into the season, the Rangers already have another showdown game in which to test themselves -- something John Tortorella sees as a mental test. Boston has allowed just two goals in two games, including its 3-1 season-opening win Saturday night over the Blueshirts in Beantown. If Tuesday's practice was any indication, Tortorella plans to start his three big guns on the same line to try and jumpstart the offense: Rick Nash, Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik, left to right. But goals are not the coach's primary concern. "We're not hard enough mentally, and that certainly transforms into how we are physically, so that needs to change," Tortorella said, shrugging off any excuses about a lockout-shortened training camp affecting his club.

I find it amusing that the Washington Post, and now the Daily News (and probably the LA Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer) after a couple of games can make these pronouncements from Mt. Olympus. I'm impressed. Why play any games at all? Let these guys watch a practice or two and simply announce how it's gonna end. Cost less.

But then these same Pundits would miss out on all the press box snacks Slappy ? Have a heart man , they need nourishment to dream up these tales !

I can't speak for the other papers, but what passes for hockey coverage The NY Daily News is abysmal. So for them to profess to have any manner of clue is laughable.
I agree with Buc...they'll be just fine, as will the coach

Agreed, but I think everyone panicking by losing a couple in right out of the gate is nonsense. I realize that they don't have the time that they would in a regular season, but I have a hard time not seing the Capitals not making the playoffs, or the Flyers not making the playoffs, or even the Rangers for that matter. Just MHO. They'll catch up.

I'm wondering how the players feel when the coach believes every single call made against them is something worth smirking and shaking his head about. Can't he just sit still for a few minutes and let the game proceed as it will? Things happen in hockey. Not everything needs to be a point of contention.

Could definitely see the Caps or Flyers busting out if they don't solve their goaltending issues. Especially if other teams (Tampa) solve theirs.

Gotta agree we are 10 days in from the start of training camp and some teams have already played 3 games. There are some teams that just haven't quite jelled yet. Now talking about playoffs they only thing I am sure we disagree with is the Pens making it in. ;)

They have food in the press box? Now I know what to do in retirement. Shoot off my mouth while knowing nothing, eat and drink a lot while spouting nonsense. HEY........I already do that! Do you get paid too?

Unlike others here, I make no guarantees. However, if they do, I'll be reminding ya of your prediction. ;)

while I agree with your point, I think it's misplaced here. I watch at least some of every NYR game. It isn't that it's a "point of contention", but there lots of bad calls (on both sides) and he doesn't really make that big a deal...unless it's an insane call. And you have to fight those, if only to show your team you're fighting for them.
Also quite frankly, a lot of his head shaking (and again, I've seen almost every game he's been here) is at his own guys. Not do demonstrative, but more like a , 'c'mon guys, what are you doing?" kind of thing.
I think he 's a damned good coach, I just wish he was more patient with his line combos...

I watched the recent Pens (well, of course I did)/NYR game, and I didn't see him get out of line at all, when there were any calls made against his team, or when my sweet boy Lundy was letting in the goals. I thought he acted rather "cooler" than usual.
And is firing him really on the table at this point? Did everyone forget how far the NYRs got last season? Hmm.

Alright, i'll give you that. He's obviously capable, and he does stick up for the guys.
I think I should have worded it differently, in that I feel like he hurts his team with his disdain for every perceived slight, both on the ice and off it. Everytime I turned my head to the tv with the Boston-NYR game Saturday night, it was him smirking and shaking. I swear, every time save Henrik's crazy save-that-maybe-wasn't-a-save.

If this team is languishing near the foot of the standings as we pull into March, don't be shocked.
I personally don't think they will be, but if they are, well, this team was built not to contend, but to win it all. You of all people know very well the power of a midseason coaching change.

I still would be shocked. GM made the changes with the players. Torts didn't. I realize eventually you have to fire the coach, cause you can't always "fire" the players, but they shake up the roster a bit, with a half of a season to work with chemistry, etc. and expect it to be all Torts fault. If come mid-season next year? Yes. This season? No. I don't think it would be fair.
