08:18 AM ET 01.23 | Well, that was fun while it lasted. Wayne Gretzky's name was linked to the vacant presidency of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday, which created a firestorm on social media, but the idea was shot down by sources close to the company. Bob McKenzie of TSN reported that the NHL Hall of Famer may have been discussed internally at Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment as a candidate for president in August. He speculated there might even have been inquiries directed to Gretzky through third parties but no direct contact. ... However, two sources close to the MLSE board said there were no discussions among the directors about hiring Gretzky. "I never heard this in my life," one source said. "I do not believe there is anything to this story."

Funnily, you are the first person to (correctly) bring that issue up amidst all the furor i've heard this morning about this.

Anyway, I dunno. He's iconic here, which is unheard of for a guy who didn't play here. He'd be close to his dad.

But as a hockey man? He's hit (02 Olympic team) and miss (Phoenix Coyotes, 06 Olympic team).

Does anybody really want 99 in their front office ?? You know he'll just hire his friends..and when his friends tank at their jobs you know he wont fire them...maybe thats his goal tho eh..to take a franchise and run it into the ground...but you know the Leafs dont need any help doing that.

More evidence that being a great player doesn't qualify you to coach. Oh, sorry to use the word "coach" for any Vancouver Canucks players reading this.
