02:11 PM ET 01.23 | The San Jose Sharks are expected to sign unrestricted free agent forward Scott Gomez to a one-year contract worth $700,000 on Wednesday afternoon. The move has been anticipated for several days, as Gomez has been practicing with the team, as well as traveling with them. Gomez was recently extended one of the first compliance buyouts under the new NHL collective bargaining agreement. He had been playing under a seven-year, $51.5 million contract, which carried an annual average value of $7,357143 against the salary cap. With regressed production over the last several years, the Montreal Canadiens were expected to extend the buyout to Gomez this offseason. After asking him not to play this season in order to avoid injury, the league and players' association amended the buyout rules to allow teams to use compliance buyouts prior to the start of the regular season. Gomez will be paid his salary from the Canadiens this season and will be on the team's salary cap. Next season, he will no longer count against their cap.
