Joe Flacco ... elite?

08:40 PM ET 01.23 | Sometime this season, when discussing fantasy football on Twitter, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco was described to me as 'meh.' And we thought this was the perfect description. For those unfamiliar with the term, here's what the ever-reliable urban dictionary has to say: "An interjection used to imply indifference towards a subject; a verbal shrug." And that, to me is what Joe Flacco usually is. You can take him or leave him. He can play really good one minute, and then have an awful game the next. He's not someone that sets the NFL afire, and without being too harsh on the guy, he does a decent enough job. But fast forward to this year's playoffs, and Joe Flacco has been anything but average. Right now, he is the definition of a player getting hot at exactly the right time. Let's take a look at his postseason statistics so far. In the Ravens' three playoff games this year, Flacco has thrown eight touchdown passes. That's more than any other postseason quarterback. Matt Ryan is second on the list with six. The Ravens QB has also yet to throw an interception, which puts him level with Andrew Luck. But remember that Luck has only played one playoff game, compared to Flacco's three. He also leads all quarterbacks with 853 passing yards. That's nearly 200 more than Tom Brady, which is unexpected, even with Brady playing one less game. He has attempted just one less pass than Brady, completing 51 out 93, leaving him with a pretty average 54.8 completion percentage. But it's worth pointing out again that he has not thrown any interceptions, which is of great importance, especially now we have reached the playoffs. Turnovers can really cripple a team's chances of winning, and Flacco has been flawless in that department. What do you think? Is Flacco elite?

Elite? Not yet, needs to win a few titles before being anointed.
There are at least 20 QBs who won a Super Bowl but never put their team on top again.
He's a possibility but with more to prove.

I agree that he needs a few SB notches on his belt before he can be considered elite. He just doesn't put up the numbers during the regular season to be held in that regard. He's never thrown for 4000 yds or reached 30 TD's in a season. He's only had a QB rating higher than 90 just once in 5 seasons and his career completion pct is just over 60%. Meh is right.

Agreed. If Brady is one of the Elite QBs with no SB wins after Spygate, than Flacco can be in the discussion.

The Rodney Dangerfield of QBs. I would be willing to bet that even if he wins and throws 3 or 4 tds they will still make Ray Lewis the MVP

Even a SB won won't make him elite. He needs to start hitting his deep receivers rather than game them go up and have to beat the CB. Right now they make him look better than he is.

I read about 5 different articles over the season saying he was not doing enough for his team and how he was not in the upper tier of QB's or even close to it!

it isn't all that impressive when the D is constantly getting turnovers, forcing punts, and providing the offense with incredibly short fields...Flacco is STILL meh....if they win, he'll be another Dilfer...

for starters, when your an elite QB, people don't wonder if your the team's weakness. No one has doubts about whether Brady, Peyton Manning, or Aaron Rodgers are top QBs. Their presence on the field inspires confidence in the offense. Flacco makes people uneasy. Flacco is OFTEN questioned as the piece holding the rest of the team back. When Flacco steps back to pass, people have NO idea which team the ball is being thrown to. That ain't elite.

If Ed Reed also retires after this season or signs with another team that is a very high possibility.

So, I am no big supporter of either Flacco or Eli Manning, but other than the obvious need for Flacco to win a SB, what is different about them? They both play inconstantly, and both seem to play much better in the playoffs. But for "The Strip" last year, this would be Flacco's second straight SB. Eli is acknowledged as a 'great' clutch QB; Flacco is 'meh'. While I am not sure I would want either were I GM over other NFL QB's, if it had to be one of them, I think I would take Flacco, myself.

Ok I get your point but let me make mine. You mentioned Brady, Manning and Rodgers as your top tier QB's. Aside from Brady, what has Manning and Rodgers done in the play offs? You question Flacco's accuracy but have you looked at Manning's in the post season? You also mentioned Flacco was holding back the team? We all know now Cam Cameron was the real reason just as Cam Cameron was the reason Drew Brees and Philip Rivers went lights out after he left. Look at how far Flacco has progressed under the new OC, Caldwell, which he clearly trust Flacco. Caldwell is a protection guy first and Cam Cameron wasn't and that was the reason of Flacco's bad decision making. Last, I really don't understand why people are in love with Rodgers and disregard Big Ben who clearly is a better QB.

You know during the 5 years he's been in the nfl, Flacco has more wins than any other qb, he's the first to ever win at least one playoff game in each of his first five seasons, has the best road game record of any qb ever. If you tacked even some of these stats to other qbs it would be proof of their worth but somehow with Joe it just doesn't. Like Eli Manning there is something about him that just doesn't inspire confidence. People say he's inconsistent but, hey every qb has bad games. I don't know what it is but for him and Eli I think that no matter what they do in their careers that cloud is always going to be over them.
