Chudzinski puts Weeden on shaky ground

07:57 AM ET 01.24 | It's not even Super Bowl week, but Brandon Weeden already finds himself on the bubble. Browns coach Rob Chudzinski stressed Wednesday that's it's "premature to say" that [Weeden] will be his starting quarterback in 2013, but it's not to early for him to designate new offensive coordinator Norv Turner as his play caller. Turner, who's coached Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, will also serve as quarterbacks coach, replacing Mark Whipple. Question is, who will Turner be coaching at the position? Both he and Chudzinski made it clear that they're just not sure if Weeden is their man yet. ... [Weeden] has the cannon arm to run Turner's vertical, downfield passing game, but not the accuracy yet, particularly on his deep ball.

Alex Smith doesn't have the long arm, yes he worked with Turner before, but I hope if Cleveland wants him, they wait till SF cuts him, do not over pay in a trade. There is no way the SF keeps him at 8 mil a year to be a backup. Only way he stays inSF is if he restructures his contract.

Weeden is no Scott Mitchell, but he seems coachable. They'll be fine. Just work on his accuracy and you'll have a decent QB there.

Trading for players is a lost art, and if a team is smart it can be more cost effective and less of a headache than free agency. If Smith goes into free agency many teams will then have to barter with his agent ( Tom Condon ) and yes the price will go up. They pay Michael Vick $16 million a year to make sure that Philadelphia is in the top 10 in the draft? There are a half a dozen teams interested in Smith and one of those teams will do the wise thing and trade for Smith.

If Cleveland wants Smith, they better trade for him. If he hits the open market in a very weak QB draft class the Browns may have to get in a bidding war with the like of the Jaguars, Jets, Chiefs, Cardinals, etc.

Alex Smith is a year younger than Weeden and he has 8 years of experience under his belt, has a QB rating of 104.1, 70% completion, has the 3rd highest Wonderlic Score of any active player. In his last year and a half he is 20-6-1 and he led his team to the conference finals in 2011.

Lombardi likes the prospect of Smith as a teacher for Colt McCoy or any other QB he may draft in the next 2 years, Weeden is not the future.

It's good to shake up the troops. If Weeden has any confidence in himself he'll go out and win the job.

If the Browns are smart they will trade for Ryan Mallett. It's apparently a rumor going around that the Browns are looking into it. Mallett has more upside than either Weeden or McCoy, and blows the QB prospects coming out in this years draft out of the water. Plus the relationship between Lombardi and Belichick may help the Browns get a favorable trade.
