Losing Hartnell could force Flyers' hand

08:13 AM ET 01.24 | Though it's early yet, the Flyers' season went from bad to worse on Wednesday. Scott Hartnell is the latest Flyer to receive bad news in what's beginning to feel like an abbreviated-season curse. He is out indefinitely with a left foot injury, according to general manager Paul Holmgren. ... It's possible that Hartnell's injury may force the Flyers' hand when it comes to rookie Scott Laughton. The team has five games to decide whether to keep Laughton with the big club or send him back to the OHL. If the Flyers elect to keep him past this weekend, this season will count as a full one against Laughton's entry-level contract. Holmgren has said he isn't bothered by the idea of burning a year on Laugton's contract.

Well, isn't Briere supposed to come back? That might help.

These are the times that test a team. It may not be the end of the world.

Worst part? They'll flub the season, miss the playoffs, get the 9th or 10th pick, draft incredibly well and wind up with another superstar.

or it expedites a Bobby Ryan trade

I have to agree with Holmgren...send him back to junior to play with the boys or keep him and have him play against men...I think a lot of these guys end up being babied too much. The ice time in the bigs may not be there, but you have to learn sometime.

I'm trying to remember the last superstar that the Flyers have drafted. Giroux has the potential but isn't there yet. In any case, if your scenario plays out, it's more likely that the Flyers will make desperate moves to upgrade the roster as Snider is getting very impatient for another Cup.

If I was a owner I'd get with the coaches and tell them to play the youngsters because this season seems to be a wash. If there is something to pull the veterans are pulling it.

That would be nice. Tho, I'd rather see a solid defenseman come to town.

With what going the other way? Pronger? They got nothing to trade.

They do have some good players in the Phantoms. Something could be worked out.

Celine "Shooting Gallery" Dion may be available.

Again, adversity doesn't have to be a bad thing. If they could hold on until Hartnell comes back, etc.

SV% - .875 GAA - 3.20

(so far Mikey's perfect)

Giroux is definitely a superstar.

For this bet to be legitimate, both goalies will actually have to play. And with the Flyers D in the shape is in, that SV% and GAA are going to look golden for the Monster.

When he gets the Flyers to a Cup final and they win, I'll be convinced. I do think he is a great player, certainly the best on the Flyers, but I'm not sure about superstar just yet.
