03:14 PM ET 01.24 | Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin will not be suspended for verbally abusing an official during Wednesday night's 4-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Malkin received a 10-minute game misconduct penalty for the way he was speaking to an official. Following the game, it was learned that Malkin was frustrated with the amount of penalties being called against the Penguins. The Russian speaking Magnitogorsk native stated that he spoke to the referees in english and admitted that he lost control while doing so. The loss was the Penguins first after the season. The team will be back in action on Friday night when they travel to Winnipeg to challenge the Jets.

If he had spoken to the ref in Russian there wouldn't be a problem.

suspending players for mouthing off would be an incredibly soft thing to start doing, which is exactly why I'm surprised that the league hasn't started doing it. Let's wait until it's a 4th liner in the same situation.

It's a respect matter. You get these superstars (Like Malkin and Crosby last night) mouthing off to the refs, pretty soon absolutely everybody's doing it and you get 7 guys at a time crowding around the ref like you do in soccer.
Like you said, wait til a 4th liner does it.

Nail on the head. I thought some of those penalties were b.s. I am a Leafs fan too, but there were too many soft calls.

I think a penalty should be given to anyone who looks at the refs for a penalty. I really can't stand anyone doing the "Sedin"

Gotta admit, the young Russians have played pretty good so far. I haven't got the spelling of em all down yet, but St Louis has a good young one, and he's playing pretty good for a rookie.

I thought an "A" allowed you to talk to the refs with a little panace, in this case stylish disagreement.

This is the second thread today about the league not disciplining players for mouthing off to or about refs. In the NFL both probably would've got a game or two suspension and $50,000 fine. The NHL needs to curb mouthing off to or about refs before it becomes a major trend.

Football, as compared to hockey? Bad comparison. This has always gone on, but someone had to make a big deal, as this year the refs are a bit sensitive.

They should get senistive they get absolutely berated after each and every call, be it the proper call or not. I for one would get sick of it. Players play Coaches coach and Referees ref. That being said are we now at 469 consecutive games that the leafs have had a 5 on 3 powerplay.

For what it's worth... players need to slow down on the amount of whining they do....and it's not Crosby / Malkin that are doing it all either .... it's coming from everywhere. Anytime there's even a chance the ref missed a call someone is crying about it. Start giving them penalties...like the misconducts....that will slow them down. I agree refs haven't been the best but crying after every whistle gets really annoying. The other thing that should get at least a 2 or an extra 2 is when a guy makes a great check...and someone on the other team goes after him for it. If it's a clean/legal hit...and one of the other team players comes after the guy ...give em 2 minutes for roughing

Players will always bi_-tch and complain about the calls..dont get it when the players' teammates go after the guy that delivers a clean check tho..i like that part of your comment..2 for roughing sounds good to this guy.
