Linebacker James Hearns decommits from Gators

01:28 PM ET 01.25 | After an official visit to Auburn last weekend, four-star linebacker James Hearns has decommitted from Florida. Hearns hasn't chosen a new school yet, and his decommitment could be academics-related. When Hearns initially began to show interest in Auburn, some insiders that cover Tigers recruiting indicated that he may not be able to qualify. If that's the case at Auburn, it's likely the case at Florida, too. In addition to the Gators and Tigers, Hearns has offers from Alabama, Florida State, Georgia and LSU, just to name a few. But if grades are an issue, that could seriously limit his options.

Once again. To his coaches, parents, counselors, and ANYONE with interest in a kid who shows scholly potential, get on their asses EARLY about academics. A 4* kid who's grades are keeping him from going to school right away??? Absolutely phu ckin ridiculous. They should all be ashamed of themselves.

The kid needs to take some responsibility himself.

Vandy is a top notch school. UF and UGA are strong state schools too. Plenty of good educational opportunities in the SEC otherwise as well. I'm sure it's a lot easier to assume we're all a bunch of idiots though. Have at it.

He wasn't implying that the SEC doesn't offer top notch education...it does. I believe the point he was making is that there isn't much concern (at some of the SEC schools) whether their athletes graduate just as long as they stay eligible to play.

Any college can put a first class football team together when you do not include academic standards-- Nick Saban could care less who graduates and who doesn't--- long as they suit up and play 60 minutes--- even though the player cannot spell ala-F___king_bama...

The same could be said for many many schools in several conferences. If I'm not mistaken, the article is stating the kid might not qualify. That suggests there are standards. I don't blame a coach for trying to recruit a kid that can contribute to his team and letting the admissions office decide whether or not he can qualify. How would you like it if your kid didn't get an opportunity to go to school because another institution denied his admission? I don't like the idea of someone getting in to school based only on physical prowess either. But different schools have different admission standards. It's not right to assume that this kid given the opportunity wouldn't make the most of it educationally or otherwise.

good point. it is a school by school/coach by coach thing. some care about education (as you just may need it down the road.) and some just wanna win, at any cost.
