Giancarlo Stanton reportedly prefers West Coast teams

06:34 AM ET 01.26 | The two most pedigreed Marlins who survived the tumultuous offseason -- and then vented on Twitter --- probably won't be here long-term. But Ricky Nolasco indicated this week he will be a good soldier, and the Marlins expect Giancarlo Stanton will, too. Stanton almost assuredly will be here longer than Nolasco. The Marlins do not plan to trade Stanton anytime soon, but an official in close touch with their front office said the Marlins know he prefers to play out West eventually (the Dodgers, Padres or Angels would be a good bet) and, barring a change of heart by Stanton, the Marlins will consider a trade next winter as he nears free agency after 2016. Or the Marlins could wait until 2015 or '16, but they don't want to lose him for nothing.

How in their right mine would want to play in CA.The taxes they have to pay is 60% of their income. What a pile of dog poop to pay for the mistake they made to pay for the unions and their retirement pay out.

Players aren't very bright. Don't expect them to weigh the nuances of income and taxation. The agents aren't going to tell them because they only care about the bottom line on the contract. They should hire a good tax lawyer or financial advisor to watch the agent.

The average top marginal tax rate on wages in the US in 2013 will be 47.8%. In California it will be 51.9%. The lowest states are at 42.8%. So he would pay 8.1% more in taxes over the lowest states and 4.1% more than the average states.
Not 60% and not incredibly higher than anywhere else. If I was making $20M I probably wouldn't mind paying the premium to live there.

If you're going to correct yourself, you had to change a lot more than that.

I still think MLB needs to combine the Rays and Marlins, have them play in Miami but be owned by Stuart Sternberg.

Another athlete who's not happy about where he's getting rich. Stop whining kid, you know how the games played. 3 more years and you will be able to go anywhere you please. And you will still only be 26.

That's all completely false information. The top STATE income tax rate in California kicks in at $500,000 and it's 12.3%. That's just state. It doesn't include federal or local income taxes. The lowest state income tax is 0% in seven states which include Texas, Washington and the state where Stanton currently plays.

Sorry, I was looking at the 2012 California income tax rates. The 2013 rates rise to 14.63 percent and don't top out until 1,000,000. That wouldn't matter to me, but it will be several million a year to Stanton once he gets a free agent deal.

37.3% Fed and 14.6% CA = 51.9%, right?
I'm just quoting from the report, but it isn't 60% like the other poster said.
Other things that people don't consider is property taxes. rates are higher in Texas, for instance, because they fund schools from property tax.

wiseup: If Loria's Marlins wanted to trade you to the Cubs or Houston Stanton would have no say for a couple of more years. Stanton should be careful what he wishes for. He might get it.

Stanton, Kemp, Ethier ...That's a nice looking outfield
A) If one of them is willing to move to left
B) If Carl Crawford doesn't pan out as expected

60% OF THEIR INCOME? WHERE DID YOU GET THAT NUMBER FROM? I KNOW fLORIDA HAS NO STATE TAX BUT THATS THE ONLY WAY THEY GET PEOPLE TO LIVE THRE. YUCK. BTW - YOU PAY MORE IN TOLLS THAN I PAY IN INCOME TAX.
THE TOP RATE IN CA IS 11% BTW.
