Smith expected to seek release

07:22 AM ET 01.28 | Alex Smith will soon become a luxury the Niners likely can't afford. It's widely believed that the 49ers will trade quarterback [Smith]. The former starter is due to earn $8.5 million in 2013, with $1 million guaranteed now and the balance guaranteed as of April 1. ... But the player prefers not to afford the 49ers a chance to trade him. Instead, a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that Smith is expected to seek his release before the start of free agency. It's a calculated risk for Smith. On one hand, he's be able to join any team he wants. On the other hand, he'd be losing the $8.5 million that he'd earn this year if his contract is traded. Of course, that contract could make it harder to trade him.

It depends on how the Niners front office decides to treat him. If they offer to give him some say on who he's traded to, he might be better off with a trade. But, if they go for the best deal regardless, he could end up with a perennial bottom-dweller and end up on IR with a shortened career thanks to that hallmark of bottom-dwellers, the poor offensive line.

I believe both Mark Sanchez and Matt Flynn make that kind of money (8 mil)? He's got to be worth more than them, I'm sure he will find a buyer, if he's released the team signing him gets him without giving up up a draft pick or player and he gets his new guaranteed contract!

He should. The team and management have shown that they are not interested in employing his talent as a quarterback for the 49ers.

I'm sure! He already played out a 6yr $49Million dollar deal and just got paid $8Mil last year. A whole lot of mobile homes you could get with that kinda money.

Sounds like " Pro Football Talk " is the talking head for Alex Smiths agent ( Tom Condon ). The major beneficiary will be Condon.
Trading is the most cost effective and best bang for your buck approach to this. Teams interested in Smith will have to go through the long arduous process known as free agency, where the agent keeps playing head games with GM's trying to raise up the price of his client, and your team is put on hold as you await the agents decision. In the end you get a 4+ year contract only hoping for what you expect to get. How many times have we seen a Free Agent underperform after getting a new contract? Trading eliminates the headaches, you know what you will have to pay for the next 2 years and if things go great then you extend the contract and pay accordingly, if the things don't work out you let him go and all you are out is that years salary and a draft pick or 2, and lets face the facts, the 2013 draft does not look very promising, talent wise. Last years draft was stronger and even 2012 was not very fruitful in the first 2 rounds at producing starting players.

I can see where he would want to start, but he may play yet the SB has a way of messing with rookies heads.

That ring would be a painful thing to look at for a competitor. He helped get it (if they get it), but it's not the same. I feel for this kid. To struggle like he did and to have the offense changed on him a few times, then to come out the other side of all that playing as well as he did, only to be benched after going 6-2? That would be a little bit hellish. I don't know that I'd want to look at that ring very often, were I Mr. Smith.
