If Celtics deal Pierce, look to Memphis

07:27 AM ET 01.28 | Whether Boston wakes up Monday reading obituaries Doc Rivers says he won't write, the Celtics certainly have a problem without Rajon Rondo -- and it may lead to a significant trade. Much of the speculation, for good reason, surrounds [Paul Pierce]. ... One team that rival execs expect to be at the forefront of the Pierce pursuit is Memphis, which delayed but did not solve its long-term payroll concerns by getting under the luxury-tax line with last week's trade with Cleveland. While Memphis can survive for the rest of this season without trading Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph or Marc Gasol, it still cannot sustain such a top-heavy payroll for the next two seasons. Pierce would keep the Grizzlies dangerous.

Not much value left in PP. The rockets can use a veteran

Gay is one of my favorite players in the NBA but the Celtics already have Green who is getting paid 8 million a year. What is Gay supposed to do?
I rather get Z-Bo. Booyahhhhh.

And Pierce should retire as a Celtic. If he gets traded he'll retire immediately.

The small market teams ultimately can barely compete with the larger market teams. Memphis drafted well traded well and still had to give away players unless they would go over the luxury tax which they apparently can't afford or unwilling to pay. I mean their options are to trade a young wing in Gay or get a cheaper aging past his prime veteran. That is the state of the smaller market teams. Small market teams must get a once a generation talent on the LeBron, Durant level or draft extremely well like the Spurs. OKC actually were slightly penalized for drafting too well with KD, Ibaka, Westbrook and Harden

Wow, if this happens (though understandable) I just can't see Pierce leaving Boston. If he gets traded, he might as well retire. That way my memory of him will be as it always was, a Celtic.

Why would the Grizzles want Pierce? Giving up Gay would be a major loss for Memphis. This new collective bargain cap is causing teams to panic much to soon, look what Dallas a season ago in preparation for what may happen next season; crazy.
