Mets cooling on Bourn, warming to Wilson

07:30 AM ET 01.28 | In a manner of speaking, the Mets are getting picky. [GM] Sandy Alderson says he is "very reluctant" to lose the club's first-round draft pick to sign a free agent such as Michael Bourn. "The blueprint here is to rebuild the farm system at the same time that we try to be competitive. For us to lose a first-round pick would be counter to that approach," Alderson said during an interview Sunday morning on SiriusXM Radio with hosts Jim Bowden and Jim Duquette in which Alderson also revealed he'll be taking a second look at free-agent reliever Brian Wilson next week. ... The Mets hold the 11th pick in the draft and would lose it if they signed Bourn because only the top 10 picks are protected under the latest collective bargaining agreement.

Atlanta might do well to sign Bourn to a one-year deal with lots of incentives, then deal Bourn elsewhere. That way another team doesn't lose the draft pick, Bourn gets a job, and Atlanta gets a prospect.
But...won't happen.

Under those conditions, Boston should grab him.

I could not understand why the Mets were even thinking about Bourn, because you have made one big plunder already my signing number 5 long term, and both of them together would not have put you over the top.

Quite honestly Sulla, I think we ought to give them Aceves whether we get Bourn or not.

don't believe they were - A PR stunt - they knew they answer was going to be no you will lose a draft pick becuase we are not going to bend the rules for you. Then they can go to their fan base and say, "it wasn't the money it was the pick - see we are not cheap/broke"

that would be the right thing to do, the braves should, sign bourn to a one qualifying year/then trade him for a top prospect and that would avoid any team losing their number one draft pick, but what do i know??

the mets wouldn't like to give the bonus pull money plus the # 1 draft pick, all this is a little too much at the end!!!

its there the slim posibility for Bourn to be signed by the braves?? then the braves turn around and trade bourn to the yankees example??

The problem with signing him to trade him is the risk in that deal. They would also have to deal with Boras for little to no gain. A team not willing to give up bonus cap and a draft pick isn't going to give up anything substantial to trade for Bourn after the Braves sign him.

Daily News reported Sandy Alderson scouted Wilson this weekend and is supposedly no where near ready....this story is just that....a story.....

Yeah, ATL would not make that deal unless there was another team lined up with a pre-arranged deal.

Pretty sure you can't sign and trade in baseball, guys. Isn't there a time span you have to keep a player after signing him?
