07:32 AM ET 01.28 | Manager Don Mattingly has done his part. [Mattingly] talked with free agent third baseman Scott Rolen -- who has played for the Reds since being traded from the Blue Jays for Edwin Encarnacion, Josh Roenicke and Zach Stewart on July 31, 2009 -- about the possibility of adding him as a veteran option, according to MLB.com's Ken Gurnick as well as the Orange County Register's Bill Plunkett. ... Reds GM Walt Jocketty was asked about Rolen at the Reds Winter Caravan stop in Hamilton. When asked if he knows anything about Rolen, Jocketty joked, "Yes. But I'm not going to tell you." He then added that we should know one way or the other about Scott Rolen's future "within the next couple of days."

I believe Rolen's non-answer is the answer.

If he still thinks he still an everyday player then LA would be his best choice to prove he still can.

Looking back, that was a really bad trade for the Reds.

Considering the Reds have won the division 2 of the last 3 seasons, not really. The thinking is Rolen will either play for the Reds or retire since he lives close in Indiana.

Yep......Because in Cincy he will be a back-up at best or a Pitch hitter since there's to much young talent, but he would be a good guy to have on the bench to work with the younger players.

True, but not because of Rolen.

the reds always could trade for Encarnacion, just add the right amount of players and no problem,,,,

why would he want to stay with the reds? unless he's playing time be extended other than that, the money in his new contract could be more attractive..

Why?......They have much younger talent they don't need him, problem they have now is finding playing time for some of the younger players......and besides when Encarnacion here he couldn't crack the line-up as an everyday player and I don't think he could now either.

People underestimate the value of Rolen's defense. He ain't what he used to be; but only a few in history were as good as he used to be. He's still a top defender which is great for a pitching staff trying to survive in a tiny park.

Good point. If the guy can go part-time and late innings, he'd be worth the spot.
Question is, would Rolen accept that role?

I'm not sure. He may know that he can't be an everyday player at this point. He wasn't easy to manage any way but penciling him in as long as he could walk in St. Louis. Maybe he's grown a bit.
I've always felt bad for the guy. He was well on his way to the Hall until he ran into a giant chinese guy. He was never the same after that. Those shoulder issues robbed him of all his power.

He can still make money in St. Louis if he retires. Edmunds came back, there's no reason Rolen can't. I still see people wearing his jersey. He could have a successful business here. I wouldn't mind seeing him work with Freese on his defense.

wiseup: Rolen,s back issues and shoulders issues last year limited his defense on some plays and his hitting has dropped off the last two years. He could be helpful as a coach or minor league instructor at tripple A.

wiseup: The roster spots at third has already been filled. Frazier will start at third, backed up by recently aquired Jack Hanahan as the backup at third

Encarnacion was let go by the Blue Jays, before regaining his form, getting re-signed by them, and then having career numbers - no? Saying that was a bad trade for the Reds doesn't show a full understanding of the history.
