Can Michigan remain No. 1 in college basketball?

09:28 PM ET 01.28 | Nirvana. Bill Clinton. The Fab Five. All of these things were relevant pop culture phenomenons the last time the Michigan Wolverines were the No. 1 team in the AP Top 25 poll, but 20 years later the Wolverines have made it back to the top and are -- for now -- the best team in college basketball. But while it's a pretty momentous and nostalgic occasion, head coach John Beilein is trying not get carried away. Michigan is once again riding high, as they're coming off a season where they finished tied for the Big Ten title, and are currently in a position to take control of the conference if No. 3 Indiana loses another game. As it stands right now, two of the top three teams in the country are from the Big Ten and both are deadlocked atop the conference. We're still a month away from March, but if Michigan can keep this up, they're going to ride this momentum into a high seed in a few months and might do some damage during all the Madness.

"while it's a pretty momentous and nostalgic occasion..." I don't know if I would want to feel too nostalgic as a Michigan fan, we all now how things turned out for their last number 1 team...

Michigan is the #1 team in the AP Poll.

The best team in college basketball is not necessarily the #1 ranked team.

Polls are effectively bullsheet, outside of fodder for speculation / arguments.

Agreed.

How about the argument that the team that wins the NCAA basketball tourney is not necessarily the best team? Just the hottest team at the end of the year that received the best draw in the tourney. [I've heard that one before too.]

I tend to side with it's the way to decide a national champion that exists in major college sports. There's always a detractor or two.

I do think it is possible that the best team is not necessarily the "National Champion". Especially when you are in a "One and Done" type tournament.

They win the tournament and deserve the "National Championship" trophy but . . .

Case in point the 1983 UNLV vs NC State or 1985 Georgetown vs Villanova. These were clear upsets where the inferior team beat the clear favorite. And if it was a 5-game or 7-game series in all likelihood UNLV and Georgetown win those championships.

Although exciting and the absolute best NCAA Tournament. The "One and Done" format lends itself to upsets where the best team may not necessarily win on that given night.

This is also what makes the NCAA Tournament the most exciting tournament that exists in the U.S. today.
