08:06 AM ET 01.29 | The WBC's star power has taken another hit. Angels first baseman Albert Pujols, who underwent minor surgery on his right knee after last season, will not play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, Angels General Manager Jerry Dipoto confirmed Monday. Pujols, through his agent, expressed a desire to play in the WBC, which will be held in early March, but because of liability issues related to his surgery, he was not cleared by Major League Baseball or the players union to participate. Pujols hit .285 with 30 home runs, 105 runs batted in and 50 doubles last season but was relegated to designated hitter for much of September after suffering his knee injury.

The need to do this in October. Only non-playoff teams participate but at least guys have been playing. You would have to be crazy to pitch in games prior to a real spring training.

+1 I hate the unnecessary injury risk to Cardinal players. I'm fine with Red and Brewer players playing in it, though.

I'll second that. I want MLB to start with as many top tier athletes as possible. It's an especially bad idea for pitchers to participate and they have injury statistics that prove that.

the thing here, the major teams shouldn't allowed not even one player to participed in the WBC games, 1, its important to protect your investments,2,avoid delaying injuries that could happen as earlier as in the start of the season,,,

he has his big contract signed, all what he has to do is play smart avoid injuries and if possible avoid vitamines that could hunt him back in the future,,,if injuried then sit down and take your time in returning to the game,,,

Just as a plain escenario,,,the major league should send to the WBC, players from the minor league system, as a full roster, in this way the major's teams shouldn't be risking their players health and their players durability in the long 162 games (season),,,,

its a tournament played just for fun, nothing big into those wasted games, for the same reason major league players SHOULDN'T participate in those games,,,,,

nobody would like to see or expected their investments been jeopardised in this way, by getting a freak injury a injury that could had been avoided but the players or the GM'S refuse to acknowledge!!!

That's good news for the Angels. Pujols has started showing his age. They don't need him extending his season when they hope to go deep into the post season.
