08:12 AM ET 01.29 | If public sentiment can't force it, maybe a law can. A bill that would require the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University to face each other on the football field every year was filed on Monday by state Rep. Ryan Guillen, D-Rio Grande City. The two flagship universities had a longstanding football rivalry, playing each other every year from 1914 until this past season. That all came to an end in 2012 following A&M's move to the Southeastern Conference. "This game is as much a Texas tradition as cowboy boots and barbeque," Guillen, an A&M graduate, said. "The purpose of the bill is to put the eyes of Texas upon our two greatest universities to restore this sacred Texas tradition."

This fool should worry more about border control.

Must not have any problems in Texas to be preoccupied with this foolishness.

Its a shame that administrators can't play nice and schedule the game on their own.

Texas taxpayers should be thrilled that their tax dollars are being put to good use.

the way A&M is playing, i'd hate to see the longhorns play them..... we need to see if we can get North Texas back on the schedule and maybe SMU or Rice.

Now this just might be the "comment of the day"!!!!!

amazing that they let the rivalry drop right before being able to celebrate a centennial.

and guess what, he's an aggy

While I agree that state representatives should not concern themselves with CFB schedules, it is sad that UTx and aTm can't figure out a way to play nice.

January 29, 2013  11:27 AM ET

I think the two schools will learn to play nice again in the future. The Texas legislature only meets for about 2 months every 2 years. I seriously doubt this bill will receive much attention.

Texas taxpayers seem to be doing pretty darned good by all accounts. It would be nice if the rest of the country was liquid enough that it can worry about the small things like this.

It was the Alabama legislature which stepped in and forced Bama & Auburn to play each other again after 30 years of bad blood.

and isn't it also by legislation that Florida State and Florida must play each other every year?

Actually, it was the threat of them stepping in. No legislation was ever passed.

Of course they should play and the athletic directors should have made it happen....big deal that had an easy solution.
