08:13 AM ET 01.29 | Michal Neuvirth is no stranger to fighting for his job. For the third straight season, [Neuvirth] arrived at training camp with another goaltender seemingly anointed as the top option on the Washington Capitals' depth chart. And for the third straight season, Neuvirth took it in stride, confident he would eventually get an opportunity to prove himself. The chance came early this year, with three starts in the first five games, and Neuvirth's performances are making a powerful case that it's his time to serve as headliner in the Capitals' net. ... Teammates say Neuvirth has served as a crutch for the Capitals, propping them up when errors in execution threatened their opportunity for success. "He's been outstanding for us," Mike Green said.

But did anybody actually expect Holtby to be a star goaltender, besides Bruins apologists perhaps?

January 29, 2013  08:55 AM ET

They had three 'young stars', and unloaded the number 1 because they felt that they had enough with the other 2. If neither of these two pans out then the person who did the talent evaluation (Kolzig?) should see their head roll.

perhaps the same person that also thought replacing Semin with Ribeiro was a wise move.

Personally, I don't think he (neuvirth) is the answer either.
Kolzig is their goalie coach?
maybe he's getting even

No. 1 emerging in Washington

Seems like a lot more #2 in Washington.

January 29, 2013  09:01 AM ET

At first glance, I read it as no one emerging in Washington.

Thought some illiterate kids were now riting the hedlinze.

Revenge is a dish best served Kolzig.

Mike Green wouldn't know outstanding if it hit him square in the jaw. Nuevy has been okay. That's it. He hasn't been the weakest link so far.

Kinda like having Kessel as your truculence coach?

the fact is no one really knows what he can be yet. Not enough data. He's been very good and very bad. Let's remember, other than the Dale Hunter chapter, this is not been a team with great commitment to defense via the BB era.

Well, yes there's that and Kaopectate.

Neuvirth has played well (mostly) and Holtby has not. Of course the "defense", if you can call it that, has been uneven to put it charitably. In a normal year there'd still be another week or two in the pre-season schedule. Bottom line, both goalies will play this year and it remains to be seen who'll wind up as number 1 for the playoffs (in fact it's still a big question if playoffs will be in the picture for them this year). I have been amused by the fact that the question of standings, careers, Cups and playoffs can be settled in 5 games or less. I think we ought to have the best journalists in hockey (an oxymoron for sure) simply choose playoff opponents right now. Or maybe just award the Cup without the season.
