02:23 PM ET 01.29 | Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Matt Niskanen will miss two-to-four weeks due to a lower-body injury. The injury was sustained during the team's game against the Ottawa Senators on Sunday when Niskanen went feet first into the boards in the first period. He was forced to leave the game and was unable to return. This loss could prove problematic for the Penguins. Coach Dan Bylsma will need to figure out how he wishes to re-construct his defense corps and will need to figure out how he wishes to use players like Ben Lovejoy and Simon Despres. The penguins will return to action on Tuesday night against the New York Islanders.

alot of early season inuries. a few weeks has a much greater impact than it would have otherwise...but, every team's got em.

Yup.....some are still trying to get over it. I will say this Markova has been riddled with injuries, yet without training camp and such.....he's playing pretty good! Why is it an excuse for these millionaire players to be out of shape? They should all be prepared, as they've had plenty of time to train.

No hockey in summer, but guys train.......so why not the same in a lockout? Laziness???

Niskanen hasn't done much in this early season, and the Pens are loaded on D.
So, this is benefits them, it lets them trot out some yound D-men for around a month.
I will not be surprised if Shero has a deal up his sleeve for another top 6 winger.

Evidence that it was beneficial for the players to seek openings elsewhere while the lockout was ongoing.

The saddest men on earth will be the Farm Team coaches. First they have the young NHL'ers yanked up after a deal is signed , now they start losing guys they expected to settle for due to an epidemic of NHL injuries.

It's going to be a question of who ISN'T out 2-4 weeks. I think bostongm stated before the lockout was settled that this would indeed be the case, lack of training camp will kill these guys.

The Penguins are not loaded at Defense??

Letang, Orpik, Martin - Played well an all over 29 minutes last game, that can't continue.
Engo, Lovejoy, Despres - All have struggled when they were forced to played in uncomfortable situations, due to a lack of experience.
Burtozzo - Not proven
Strait - Lost to NYI, playing on 1st and 2nd pairing
All Others - Obviously aren't there for a reason.

We are 3-2 not to impressive, even though it's a pretty good 3-2 win solid wins.

Strait was the ninth defenseman on our depth chart out of options and multiple teams wanted to claim him. Not to mention joe morrow. I wouldn't worry about the d. Sure we could use another top four guy to add depth but who couldn't. Their real lack is at wing. Besides Bennett they have no one coming up.

They got their inflated ice time in part because niskanen got injured early. So it won't continue.
