Kelly sees more NFL opportunity on horizon

08:13 AM ET 01.30 | Perhaps better late than never, Brian Kelly did his best Tuesday to coax Notre Dame football buzz toward normalcy. On the intrigue of the NFL and why Kelly said that it won't endure: "I just didn't know anything about it really," he said. "College is all that I've been involved in. I really didn't understand the NFL process, the game, who's involved in day-to-day operations of selecting the team -- all of those things. Quite frankly, I wanted to answer those, so I wouldn't have to go through this, because we're going to win again next year, and there's probably going to be teams that have an interest in (me) coaching in the NFL. And I want to be able to tell them definitively that I want to coach in college. I love Notre Dame. I love the college game, but I think the intrigue was more about finding out about it, so it's now easy for me to say 'no.'"

Yeah, that seems like a goofy answer. "I wanted to know what it was like, so I'd be more informed when I said no."
We hear ya, Brian, loud and clear.

Sounds like negotiating for his contract extension, which is standard Executive behavior in any industry.

Has to be the strangest answer I've ever heard.

LOL, yeah I agree!!! He could very well blow his chance in the NFL, with a couple of bad seasons at ND!!!

You are probably right, but that "contract extension" could go out the window with a bad season!!!

Unlikely, OT.
He has built a strong program in three seasons, with a stable Asst. Coaching core and some impressive recruiting results. They focused on Defense and it is working.
ND spent too many years turning over coaches to let BK go without a major reason, either some personal issue, or a string of bad years where the team looks like a return to the Charlie Weis years (OMG--can't bear the thought!!!).
He may move on to the NFL in time if he establishes his legacy at ND, but right now he's figuring out how to beat SEC teams and win the NC.

Great so when Gardner and Derrick Green come calling in 2014 Michigan doesn't have to worry about those slow ND players having an advantage with that long grass you typically grow. 8-)

It's a good move. Some of your traditionalists will probably complain but it makes sense. Kelly's building speed and that track will help.

SF, I know that BK has done a good job of bringing in recruits and building a good program at ND, but don't forget that Michigan, Ohio State and some other top notch schools have also recruited well. I'm just saying a football problen, can go down hill in a hurry. For example Auburn, USC and Arky.

I forgot to mention that Oregon and Stanford have also recruited well the last couple of years.
