06:07 PM ET 01.30 | The City of Markham has kept the GTA Centre arena project alive following a city council vote on Tuesday night, which voted against a motion to reject the financial structure of the venture by a margin of 7-6. Beginning on Tuesday night and ending early Wednesday morning, the nearly eight hour meeting consisted of arguments for and against the financial proposal of the 20,000 seat arena. Under the current structure, Markham will take out a $325 million loan, which the private portion of the project would pay half of with the city paying the other half through levies on development projects, parking revenue and surcharges on tickets.

As I mentionned on the other board...when it looks like some people lurking in the shadows are going to torpedo your deal, what better way to get the deal done than to pull an ace out of your sleeve...get a person not even currently affiliated with the NHL to pretty much guranatee the arrival of a team.

For all we know Roustan just called up Kelly and offered him a briefcase of money to say what he said.

All in all, I'd expect Markham to get a team, just like QC and Seattle...but I still don't see why people should take Kelly's words as cash in the bank.
