06:31 PM ET 01.30 | The City of Markham voted against a motion to reject the financial structure of a proposal for the construction of a 20,000 seat arena on Tuesday night. However, the most surprising development of the evening potentially came from former NHL Players' Association executive director Paul Kelly who stated that the NHL has plans to expand from 30 franchises to 32. Kelly spoke on behalf of the group interested in building the stadium and stated that he had no financial benefit from the construction, merely hoping to help the city. Friedman continued by saying that Toronto and Quebec City are the two likely destinations for expansion and that Markham should build the stadium if it hopes to get a team. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly responded to the claims on Wednesday morning by denying that the NHL currently has plans to expand to 32 teams.

how do you massage a deal that looked like it was about to fall through? You show up right before the vote and say, 'if you vote to put this through you WILL have an nhl franchise'...

QC, absolutely and as for Toronto, well they've been without a team for a very long time......so yes!

January 30, 2013  07:51 PM ET

Bring down the Coyotes to the Toronto area and the Avalanche back to Quebec City. Fixed.

Bring 'em "down'' from where?

January 30, 2013  08:29 PM ET

Here we go again.....break out the old Nords jerseys.....

I hope so, that jersey was sweet. And the rivalry with the Habs was top notch. Serious bad blood.

Agreed.

Would be much better if they didn't have to add two more teams to do so though.

or try Hamilton again.....or...how about London?

Expand? Please!!!!! As a fan of watching hockey, the key to success is contract right now. Parts of the USA just do no thave the love for the game that the minority has. Keep the NHL strong by keeping them in strong markets. If that means less teams, then so be it. NHLPA would never be OK with that as it means less players making a large six figure salary. As much as I hate Bettman for his expansion.....maybe he is just a puppet.

Bettman a puppet?....no way.

He sure looks like one....more like a muppet. I see it when he talks.....its like his face is cut in half for his mouth.

agreed. If any strings are beig pulled, Drawfus is pulling them. He is a delusional little man. This league, as noted and stated here very often...is watered down as it is, in areas that have only a passing interest, (read: when the team is winning...even then it's dodgy) in the sport.

Expansion would be the worst idea possible. The NHL needs to contract and relocate some franchises.

I'm all for a return to Quebec, but it needs to come from relocation, not expansion.

The Nords and the B's had a nice on ice rivalry as well, though not on the same level as the aforementioned team.

Man, if I lived in Markham I would be so pissed about this.

I remember another Golden Horseshoe city building a new barn in hopes of attracting a NHL team back in the 80s. Anyone wanna recall how that turned out?

This is a terrible waste of public funds.
