Chip Kelly wants Dennis Dixon as starting quarterback?

07:34 PM ET 01.30 | Earlier this week it was announced that Chip Kelly might be looking at getting rid of both Michael Vick and Nick Foles this offseason, which means today's report that Kelly is pursuing Dennis Dixon holds some serious water. CSN Philadelphia Eagles reporter Geoff Mosher reported on Wednesday that Kelly is considering signing his former quarterback at Oregon to run his offense in Philadelphia. Dixon has spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers and is currently on the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad. According to AutzenZoo.com, Dixon has been playing the part of Colin Kaepernick in the Ravens' practices leading up to the Super Bowl. Dixon also played the part of RGIII in the Ravens preparations for their game against the Redskins. Basically, Dixon has been pretending to be a star starting quarterbacks, but his old college coach might actually be giving him top billing. Dixon went out of his way to thank Kelly for the way he taught him when he was at Oregon.

Chip Kelly is going to run this team into the ground in record time...

You're giving him too much credit. My money is still on Lurie and more specifically Roseman captaining this sinking ship over the past 4 years.

There seems to be a strong divide between being a mobile quarterback and a running quarterback.
RGIII and Kaep are successful because they have settled inside that divide by combining accuracy and running ability, IMO. I don't see dennis dixon having the accuracy to be as successful as those two.
Maybe he can roll out and hit jackson deep a la donovan mcnabb...maybe.

It reminds a lot Steve Spurrier trying to win in the NFL with his former QB at Florida, Shane Matthews and Danny Wuerffel.
Not a good sign for the Eagles...

Except this is only a rumor at this point. And by all accounts Chip Kelly's life is consumed by football. Spurrier was much more concerned about his tee time than he was schemes and personnel.

And I may be wrong about this, but wasn't Dixon at Oregon before Kelly? Weren't they only there together for a year? During that year wasn't Kelly the OC not HC?

I'm not saying Kelly doesn't want Dixon, because at this point nothing would suprise me with the Eagles. But the story seems to try and make it appear as if Dixon is Kelly's "guy", when to me, from all outwardly appearances, that's not entirely the case.

In Dixon's final year at Oregon he hurt his knee and didn't finish the season. I don't remember if Kelly was HC or OC that year.

OC. Kelly became head coach in March of 09. Dixon was drafted in 08.

You are probably right, Dixon has talent but he just never seemed to be quite up to speed with the Steelers

whether he pans out at qb or not i dont think its that big of a deal cuz i dont c tha eagles havn to give up more than a 4th round pick at most to get him

He's on Baltimore's practice squad. The Eagles only have to sign him to a contract for the regular rposter. No trade is needed.

Of course they have to sign him before the Ravens do. If the Eagles make an offer and the Ravens do too, Dixen would have a choice of who he wanted to sign with for next year.

There is another article on Fn T&R about Kelly wanted Alex Smith who the Eagles would have to trade with SF to get unless he's cut in the offseason. If the Eagles trade for or sign Smith they may just want Dixon as a backup b/c he's familiar with Kelly's offense.

I'm really starting to think that Lurie just got lucky on the Andy Reid hire.

I agree. Andy with whatever shortcomings he had, had a wonderful eye for talent in the coaching staff. It wasn't until the coaching staff kept getting raided for promotions by other teams the team started to faulter.

im sure he'd pick tha eagles if they make him an offer cuz he knws for a fact he has no chance of playn in baltimore where in philly he has a shot to b a starter

Starter, maybe. Effective starter, who knows!

I will point out this though. Last year the Steelers chose to keep a 38 year-old backup (Batch) over Dixon. I think that says loads about what the Steelers thought about his potential to be a back-up let alone a starter in the NFL.
