08:05 AM ET 01.31 | In 1996, Andy Grove, the former chief executive of Intel, wrote a book called "Only the Paranoid Survive." [The book] introduced buzz phrases like "strategic inflection points" and stressed the value of paranoia. ... [Niners fullback] Bruce Miller said he hears the phrase, "stay paranoid" throughout the practice complex. Offensive lineman Alex Boone said [Jim Harbaugh] has implored him to read the book and team officials say Harbaugh touts it in private chats. When asked about Harbaugh's devotion to "Only the Paranoid," cornerback Perrish Cox starts to laugh. "His whole demeanor is all about that book," he said. Through a team spokesman, Harbaugh declined to discuss Grove's book or its impact on his coaching.

If you prepare for every possibilility, real or imagined, you will be more prepared than your opponent.

Maybe? But you can aslo be underpreared at something that counts more than a remote possibility of happening. There's just not enough time to be fully prepared for everything so if you prepare for every poosibility no matter how small the prep for someing more important has to suffer as a result.

It's not paranoia if everyone is out to get you. This being the case.

Shame SI can't afford to update their picture library. How much can a summer student with a camera phone cost?

In this case it's his brother. That could really set the clock ticking.

I wish SI would lose that photo of him.

Could the root cause be that he's just a monumental jerk?

I can't stand Baltimore, but John is so much more likable than Jim.

+1, I think. I don't know enough about Jim to say he's actually a jerk but he does come across that way. BTW, remember when paranoia was a bad thing.

I wonder if there's a chapter on handshakes?

The Lions Coach didn't read the book and so he wasn't prepared.
