08:11 AM ET 01.31 | The Red Sox need to find a replacement for bullpen coach and catching instructor Gary Tuck, but it won't be Jason Varitek. The former captain and catcher is content with his current post as a special assistant and is not ready to dive back into the eight-month, daily grind of a baseball season so soon after his playing days, according to a source familiar with Varitek's thinking. Tuck, who retired Tuesday for personal reasons, inspired almost a cult following among catchers for his instruction methods the past few years. Considering the Red Sox will likely try to combine catching instruction duties with the bullpen coaching job, two leading internal suspects to replace Tuck are Chad Epperson and Rich Gedman.

Makes sense, Tek. Give the donut-eating wannabes from the New England sports media someone else's leg to chew on for a year. Enjoy a year off, and come back when you'll be appreciated.

Varitek would be an excellent pitching coach as well as a MANAGER, but is not the right time not just yet,,,,

Varitek needs to easy get into coaching knowledge, for a few years then things could be looking awesome positive for the old timer!!!

A Red Sox thread with only 4 comments? Where's that middle-aged divorcee to drum up off-topic conversation?

On topic - I don't blame him. Cushy office job with minimal travel > 162 game schedule.

Tell that to his rings.

Tell that to his record number of no hitters caught.
