Sooners forced to pitch recruits on new scheme

08:15 AM ET 01.31 | As the brothers Stoops look to the future, they are more likely than ever to do so with an eye on the power of three, as in the 3-4. Chatting with OU commit Jordan Evans last Saturday, I learned that the Sooner staff is telling recruits that OU likely will change to a 3-4 defense. It only made sense and we figured that would be the case, but now we have confirmation that the coaches are seriously looking at it. And it's clear why. Lack of defensive tackles. The Sooners hope a 3-4 leads to a better pass rush, but the move to a 3-4 is out of necessity. OU was wiped out at defensive tackle -- Jamarkus McFarland, David King, Casey Walker and Stacey McGee, all gone.

It's hard to run a 4-3 without about 4 good DTs to rotate in and out. A 3-4 makes it easier, because there are a lot of guys out there that are tweeners coming out of HS at about 260 or so that can move between OLB and DE.

It's not like the "good old days". I can remember one year that Sooners had 2 DEs weighing under 200 lbs. It was a notoriety even then but at least feasible (when they got knocked down they were very quick to get up and could pursue running backs like hell).

that, and with most offenses he sees could use the extra speed on D

zerOU is in serious trouble. No one believes the Kool-Aid that Bob and Mike are selling, well, most good recruits don't. They'll be lucky to finish in the Top 25 next season!
