08:16 AM ET 01.31 | USC's Lane Kiffin may have few sympathizers, but he may also be finding ways to court them. [During] a nearly two-hour interview, Kiffin did more than just take responsibility for one of the most exasperating and spectacularly failed seasons in recent USC history. He also said he was a coaching work in progress, that he had needed to grow up, that he was sometimes his own worst enemy. It wasn't an apology, but it was an admission. And for Kiffin, that's progress. Nobody in college football takes more public relations body blows than Kiffin. ... "Why do I feel like I'd be the most polarizing figure?" said Kiffin, phrasing his own question. "I would say it's got to be a combination of things."

*had* to? He still has a way to go.
(And it's not like his father didn't have far to go to box his ears and remind him to show some maturity!)

Piratey, you're right. A 37 year old man should be more mature!!!

ICE, IMO, If USC doesn't go at least 9-4, LK is gone!!!

It depends on the "9-4" and how we look doing it. If he looks as bad against the domers and bruins like he did this year, and tanks the bed more than once against a "lower team" then he will be gone. It won't just be about the record.

And when did that happen?

I am guessing (tell me if I am wrong ICE & OT) that a lot of USC fans kind of gave him a "pass" for the loss against ND since they played pretty well (although his play calling at the end was open for criticism) and they didn't have Barkley. Having said that I agree that if he loses to ND and UCLA next season even Haden will have a hard time defending him...

For me, the "pass" comes from the year before. 10-2. Beating the ducks in eugene, and the domers in south bend after they had a week to prepare. Nobody picked us to win those two games, but we did. This is his make-or-break year.

You ma be right OT but if he only goes 9-4 there will be howling for his blood, or maybe his head on a stake. What good-guy Pat does might be a different question. I don't want to wish ill for Pat but I'd like him in the broadcast both for Irish games again.

Sittlichk, yeah most USC fans (not me) would complain about a 9-4 record. I think the days of Pat Haden in a broadcast booth are over, for a least a few years. :-)

I think it helped at the time that ND was undefeated. Haden is already making comments that make me think that in private he has said things that are not good for Kiffin's long term tenure.

This punk has failed in every job he as ever had, yet he continues to get hired. But every year removed from what Pete Carroll built will continue the decline at SC.

Pete Carroll left an NFL franchise at SC. So don't go breaking your hand patting Kiffin on the back for what he did in his first year. That was a weak year for the PAC and the team was still primarily Pete Carroll's team. This past year had Kiffin's mark stamped on it.
