Suns eyeing Smith?

09:27 PM ET 01.31 | The Phoenix Suns want Josh Smith. Whether that means working with the Atlanta Hawks for a trade this season, or waiting until the versatile forward becomes a free agent following the 2012-13 season remains to be seen. The Suns, in need of a franchise player, whiffed on signing Eric Gordon during the summer as the New Orleans Hornets matched an offer sheet to keep the high-scoring guard. Phoenix also failed to work out a trade with Memphis for Rudy Gay, and now it appears Smith is next on the agenda. Though the Suns don't have the greatest of assets to offer outside of center Marcin Gortat, they do have a number of expiring contracts along with some financial flexibility. That is all dependent on if Hawks are interested in getting something in return for Smith before risking the potential for the forward to walk at season's end.
