Does Alex Smith make Kansas City Chiefs contenders?

10:30 PM ET 01.31 | The Kansas City Chiefs have shown early interest in San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. It wasn't clear to me the other day whether Rapoport was just speculating on which teams could be interested in Smith or if he was actually reporting that they were. Tonight, NFL.com began pushing the story a bit harder and they appear to be reporting the interest as the real deal. Tonight, NFL.com dropped another article. This time they quote analyst and former NFL QB Trent Dilfer. According to Dilfer, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was interested in Smith previously. The Dilfer quotes come from the San Francisco Chronicle. SO if Alex Smith is indeed on his way to Kanas City, does this mean he'll make the Chiefs a contender or will this just crumble like everything else?

KC needs a QB. But Smith needs a solid team around him. He's no savior. We saw what he couldn't do earlier in his career. The Chiefs has bupkus. They need to spend those picks on building blocks like OL, DB's and pass rushers.

Smith has shown that he can manage a decent offense, but the Chiefs are nothing close to being decent. I do see a couple of other teams that could use Smith right away.

In the 2011 season K.C. had a decent season and missed the playoffs by 1 game. Their level of play dropped off significantly in 2012. The AFC West is not that challenging of a division. I think Kansas City is one of about 4 or 5 teams that Smith could go to and give that team a better record.

You really wonder whether Smith finally overcame his struggles from earlier in his career, or if he's just simply in an offensive system which works for him - in the case of the latter, he may struggle when he goes elsewhere.

He's better off in Arizona, he knows the division and conference! They have a good defense and he might be the guy to get their offense going?

Very true. Best match.
