08:01 AM ET 02.01 | Could Alex Smith follow the path of Joe Montana -- from San Francisco to Kansas City? [On Thursday], ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer said new Kansas City coach Andy Reid, then with the Eagles, expressed interest in acquiring Smith when he was a free agent after the 2011 season. According to Dilfer, Reid "really likes Alex." "There was a courtship last year, to a certain degree," Dilfer said. Asked for specifics of Philadelphia's dalliance with Smith, he said, "I don't know a whole lot. I just know there was a courtship. It was not even an inside source, you know what I mean? It was just kind of the scuttle in the offseason." Dilfer and Smith are close friends who were teammates in San Francisco from 2006-07.

That's where any remote similarity between the two QBs ends.

I guess some people wil ever come to grips with the fact Alex had the highest Passer Rating in the NFL when he lost his job.
Any of you megatron brains want to predict a QB in the draft who's going to be better than Alex is right now over the next two seasons?

I guess some people forget that Alex stunk up the joint for many years... until Harbaugh came along... someone whom he almost surely won't be working with next year.
I can imagine there are a few QB in the draft whose upside is bigger than Smith's, considering that we've already seen Smith's best.

Good fit until they find their QB of the future.

Got to agree with that. But remember all of last year's hype over Matt Flynn.

Alex Smith, or Kevin Kolb/John Sketon? No brainer, at least for now.

Andy has lots of choices. He said Kolb was the real deal and VY was just too good to be a back up in the NFL and was the leading voice in giving Vick that huge contract. I think he can be trusted to find a QB.

And Harbaugh would rather put up with Smith then have him go to a division rival. OK rival is going over the top right now.

Actually, Harbaugh couldn't care less if Alex Smith went to the Cardinals. Do you think the Arizona Cardinals cause any problems for the 49ers? Of course not.
Also, if Smith is on the 49ers roster in a few weeks, he will be due a large roster bonus and his 2013 salary will be guaranteed. The 49ers certainly will trade or release Smith prior to that happening. (Even if that means that Alex Smith goes to the Cardinals). (To be their next starting QB for 6-10 teams).

Cardinals had a workable defense this last season and with a Larry Fitzgerald a decent QB could improve their win record. Wilson might be due for second-year fade a la Newton, but the real impediment is SF which, with the D, Kaepernick and Harbaugh, could be division champs for quite a while. Sitting at 7 in the 2013 draft, AZ could go for Barkley (who project as a Round 2 pick), but that would be a mistake. Best play is to get Smith.

If history is truly an indicator of the future , then perhaps the QB choice should not be left up to Andy.
