08:20 AM ET 02.01 | Oklahoma has two holes to fill in the defensive backfield, both of its starting safeties, and Sooners commit Hatari Byrd says he has one of those spots locked up. Byrd, a four-star prospect from Central High in Fresno, Calif., said Sooner coaches have told him that he's going to start as a true freshman. "I'm going to come in and work really hard -- that's the type of player I am -- but they told me I'm going to be the starter," Byrd said in a telephone interview. "They told me it's my spot." Byrd didn't specify whether he'd be a strong or free safety in Norman, but did say he's more comfortable playing pass defense. "I can come up and stop the run, but I'm more of a cover guy," Byrd said.

Agreed. Promising the guy the job before he has even put in the work? Not the kind of thing that endears current players to the coach or the incoming player.
He'd better deliver, or there might be some trouble coming.

It's not clear from the article that Stoops promised anything. If one of his coaches made promises, Stoops could disavow all knowledge of the so-called promise. Of course, this won't happen until after the young man has signed and faxed his LOI.

Stoops prob did, Mike Stoops that is.
0U seems to have lost some of its recruiting mojo in Texas, recruits that in the past would be a no brainer selection are now going to TCU, aTm and even Baylor. Are they getting a bit desperate to get the 4*'s?

One of the great things about CFB today is the amount of tv coverage. With just about everyone on tv each week, it levels the playing field to a certain degree. Young men can pick a smaller school, or a non-traditional power and still be seen.

So this kid is moving from Fresno to Oklahoma. Guess he really enjoys watching grass (or table grapes or wheat) grow.
I always wonder why a top recruit would choose a place like Oklahoma or even Alabama over USC or Stanford or even Hawaii. If he's really that good he'll get the attention, and in the meantime he can go to a school where life beyond the campus has a lot to offer.
