Bob Knight: Fab Five 'never won anything'

08:09 AM ET 02.02 | At 20-1, the 2012-13 Wolverines have drawn comparisons to Michigan's famous -- and often criticized -- Fab Five group of freshmen who took the college basketball world by storm in the early 1990s. Former Indiana coach -- and current ESPN analyst -- Bob Knight? Well, he never saw the point of it. "I'm not sure what the Fab Five was," Knight said Thursday during an ESPN broadcast of an Alabama-Arkansas game. "They never won anything. "They never won a championship, they didn't get anywhere, they got beat." Shortly after ESPN showed a promotion for Saturday's matchup between No. 1 Michigan and No. 3 Indiana in Bloomington's Assembly Hall, play-by-play man Rece Davis began to offer a historical perspective on how long it'd been since Michigan had reached the No. 1 spot in a national poll. And, naturally, the Fab Five's 1992-93 team -- which began the year as the preseason No. 1 -- came up. Knight, as is often the case these days, was not impressed. "Fab indicates, to me, that you've won something," Knight said.

I'm surprised at KnIght saying that, Perhaps he was so busy "whining" at Indiana at the time that he didn't notice the final scores Wolverines.
By Knight's reasoning, the Fab Four (aka Beatles) were not fabulous either. They didn't win any NC championships.
It must be very comforting to be as blind as Knight. You don't have to be confronted with your own poor understanding of the world.

Knight brings up some valid points that the other commentators were afraid to mention. That Michigan team kind of paved the way for all the freshmen that are starting now. Just think, if they didn't do that, Calipari at Kentucky would have to recruit differently.

As noted above, they started 5 freshmen and went to the NCAA Championship and then did the same thing the next season. They lost both times but how many teams can say they went to back to back Finals? Did Knight even make it to the Final 4 after the 80's?

The Fab 5 was the beginning of the end for college basketball's best days. What they and their kind brought to college basketball is why I have stopped watching until March. One-and-done players, street agents, AAU booster connections, lack of academic pursuit etc ... what a joke to call them student athletes.
Today's college basketball = advanced high school basketball. Barely worth the price of admission. Today's teams wouldn't stand a chance against teams from 20 years ago loaded with junior/senior leadership/experience.

Except the number 2 team in the nation starts 4 seniors. I would argue that there are plenty of teams with experience. I would also argue that last years Kentucky team would have beat the Fab 5....they were that good.. Scary part is I think next season, Kentucky will be better than last season.

I have a lot of respect for what Bill Self does at Kansas and what Mike Krzyzewski does at Duke. Boeheim and Calhoun too. However there are too many programs on the other end of the spectrum with the likes of Calipari, Matta and Barnes who are content to run transitional NBA farm teams with the help of AAU boosters and street agents. College ball just isn't the same anymore.
As good as last year's Kentucky team was, they wouldn't stand a chance against teams from 20 years ago who played together 3 years. Go back further and it would be even more pronounced.

Knight's comment doesn't make much sense when placed in any realistic context. You had a team that started five freshmen and almost won a national title; it was, by any objective standard, a very impressive run for a bunch of guys who were new to college hoops and new to each other. Knight probably disapproved of them in other ways and is just getting a little dig in at them, which comes across loud and clear.
