Patriots haven't talked contract with Wes Welker

08:17 AM ET 02.02 | Patriots owner Robert Kraft would like to keep employing Wes Welker. There seems to be little question that the feeling is reciprocated by the slot receiver. Sentiment, however, doesn't pay the bills, and that's where things get complicated. Kraft noted again yesterday that both sides need to come together to arrange a deal. Of course, the Patriots could use the power move of hitting Welker with the franchise tag again, but the chances of that happening are highly unlikely. It's bad business on a variety of levels, the least of which being it would cost the team $11.5 million in 2013.

Terrific player no doubt but the drops in the biggest games bothers me.

the ~franchise~ tag would be bad business for who ?.........i think wes will have averaged $5.5 mill/yr [2007-13] if he gets that tender for 2013.,....they basically $toled him when he arrived.

The season's not over yet. I don't think teams are even allow to talk to UFA until it ends. So what's the big deal?

Pats don't like to dish out the big $$$ especially to a player at Welker's age but if they don't sign Brady's security blanket they best find him someone else in the draft or free agency. Tough to replace 100+ catches the last 5 years

Offer him 10 mil for 2013, then put a clause in the contract he has to give back a mil for every ball dropped

Every reciever drops balls, their are other guys on the team that dont carry their weight, without him their not in the playoffs and no game and i mean no game is dependent on one or to plays!

True, but it was upsetting to see Brady hit hime in the hands and he dropped it.

Even Jerry Rice dropped one now and then. If the Pats don't want him I'm pretty sure he will not have to wait long until the phone rings

Almost 3K recieving yards for the last two years, and he'll be 32 the start of next season. And you're right 240 catches to go with it. Didn't miss a game start either. He's good for a three year contract.

We've seen this scenario before with the Pats; they won't pay big money for players on the downside of their career.
Bob Kraft is a businessman, not a sentimentalist, and the Pats are very profitable.
Unless Wes will take a contract for less than he can get elsewhere he is probably gone.

He only dropped one Pass that hit him in the Hands the others would have been outstanding catches and where was the rest of the team?

Exactly! And if winning is determined by his play, then he deserves to be paid accordingly. Look, the cap is low this coming year, around $121 million, but then it goes up to the mid $130s next year. It is not hard to write a contract that pays him what he wants and deserves, guarantee what is fair and push the load of it down the road a year or two. If a deal does not get done, then it is because the Pats have decided to move on, not Welker.

With the way the cap is going I'd like to see him do a 1 year contract and play his heart out for a new contract. From where I sat the team is better when they play him.
