Nick Van Exel's son sentenced to 60 years in shooting death

09:05 AM ET 02.02 | A Dallas County jury on Friday gave a 60-year prison sentence to the son of former Dallas Maverick Nick Van Exel in the December 2010 killing of his best friend, Bradley Eyo. Nickey Van Exel, 22, showed no reaction to the sentence, which was read by state District Judge Tracy Holmes. hat pain was palpable, too, for the elder Van Exel, who broke down during his testimony earlier in the day. He spoke briefly of the sentence on his way out of the courtroom. "That's a long time," he said. "I feel bad for the Eyo family." Van Exel then began to cry and walked away. His son will be eligible for parole in 30 years.

I agree that Nick's son is very lucky. Totally disagree about Texas being a"hang 'em high, gun 'em down state". Texas is far more accurately and fairly viewed as a victim's rights state.
Bradley Eyo was the guy Van Exel killed. They commited armed robberies together. Eyo got caught but there was not enough evidence to charge Van Exel As part of a plea deal, Eyo was to give complete testimony about the crimes, including implicating Van Exel as an accomplice. He told this to Van Exel, and fearing being caught and jailed, Van Exel killed him, wrapped his body in plastic and put it in his SUV. Then he drove down to a lake and dumped the body.
When the police sorted this out, Van Exel claimed it was an accidental shooting. The jury did not believe it. The jury could have convicted him on capital murder, which would have automatically triggered a sentence of death. Instead, they convicted him on a lesser charge for the killing and he was sentenced to 60 years.
Bradley Eyo did not deserve this. Neither did his family deserve the suffering and pain. The justice system in the state of Texas acted on their behalf, as well as on behalf of all residents of the state of Texas.
