His United States team is about to begin the final stage of its bid to reach next year's World Cup in Brazil. As a prominent member of both squads, Dempsey is being tugged from one side of the Atlantic to the other, and then back, and being asked to play a preposterous number of important games in a condensed time period. It is the kind of schedule that would leave the most hardened business traveler exhausted, but the 29-year-old Dempsey, whose toughness has been a constant of his career, is taking it all in stride. He will play four games in 10 days.
