Major Applewhite caught in UT political ploy?

10:44 AM ET 02.03 | The agenda for today's "special called telephone meeting" of the UT System Board of Regents does not mention Major Applewhite's name -- who was disciplined in 2009 for an inappropriate relationship with a student -- but there is little doubt that Friday's disclosure of behavior that the assistant coach himself described in a public statement as "totally inappropriate" prompted the rare session. The agenda says no action will be taken and that a closed-door discussion will cover employees, including athletics personnel; legal issues concerning individual athletics personnel at the Austin campus; and legal issues related to inappropriate relationships between employees and students in the UT System, which consists of nine academic and six health campuses. The dust-up comes amid long-running tension on the UT board, much of it involving the Austin campus and President Bill Powers. For example, the school's president clashed with regents when they partnered with a private company to track students' academic progress and when they denied his proposed tuition increase. Two well-placed sources told the American-Statesman that the board is divided on Powers, with a slim majority backing the president. The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said the scheduling of a Sunday meeting puts Powers and his campus in a negative light. Personnel matters are routinely handled at the campus level, the sources said. "I think it's a shame that Major is kind of being used in a political ploy against people at the University of Texas at Austin," said one of the sources. "It's really about Bill Powers. In discrediting Mack Brown and DeLoss Dodds, you discredit Bill Powers."

Kirk Bohls needs to move to Roswell NM with the rest of the conspiracy theorists.

Applewhite and Dodds released statements because UTx is about to be slapped with a wrongful terminitation/defamation lawsuit based on gender and race. Dodds and Applewhite told the public what the accuser's lawyers would have discovered by invoking the freedom of information act.

First, it's someone else's pants - now, it's a UT political ploy. I guess this explains the brevity of his playing days - he can't scramble.

If the board determines that university policy was not followed in any way ... probably.

Didn't they look into that when it happened? Seems that if he ends up getting the boot now, it will be because of political BS.

Not sure I understand this.....UT is too complicated with its politicizing. I'm sure Mack Brown is still throwing people under the bus to save his own ****et$ though...that we can be sure of, LOL.

If Major gets canned in the political games, it shouldn't take too long to find another.
