Why Denver Kirkland will not be a Hurricane

09:07 AM ET 02.03 | The Miami/Denver Kirkland soap opera ended Saturday, when Kirkland met with UM coaches and decided not to attend Miami, according to his step-father, who said Denver will choose FSU or Arkansas. But why did UM pull its scholarship offer to the Booker T. Washington All-American on Thursday? A UM source said here was the thinking at the time: Kirkland had a Hurricanes offer for nine months (he chose not to accept a take-it-or-leave-it offer from UM on Thursday) and UM coaches felt he was playing games with them. Plus, UM had some silent commitments at the time and was expecting a full class (17 or 18) without him. Al Golden doesn't like to over-sign and force players to gray shirt or go to prep school. But Golden changed his mind for reasons that he might clarify on National Signing Day. Unfortunately for UM, it was too late. Kirkland met with several Hurricanes assistant coaches on Saturday, but they couldn't persuade him after Thursday's initial yanking of the offer. UM president Donna Shalala also called the Kirkland family, but that didn't sway him, either. Booker T. Washington coaches believe Kirkland would have picked UM if the offer hadn't been retracted Thursday.

I'm not a cane fan but I can understand Golden pulling an offer if he thinks the recruit is jerking him around and numbers are tight. Until the fax goes through, anything can happen.

Exactly. Well said, BCSisnuts. Everyone is spinning this to make the Miami staff look so bad, but look, with such limited scholarships this year we couldn't afford to be jerked around by some kid and then potentially burned by him on NSD, no matter who good he was. If he wanted to be a Cane 100% (like Duke Johnson last year) the scholarship was his, period. But he wanted to wait til NSD, I have no problem with that, that's his right and 18yr kids all are eager for that ego-boosting moment in the spotlight; but it's also Golden's right to tell him that if he wasn't fully on board then Miami had to move in a different direction. It also is probably a sign that Golden has gotten some silent commitments from some other big names and needed to know whether the spot would be open or not. At this point, while I don't blame Kirkland at all, I am glad he's going elsewhere; yes, he's talented, but Golden has spent almost 3 years weeding out the ego-issues that had so permeated this program. Same with Thomas if he chooses to go too, I'd love to have him, but he won't make or break this team, and if his heart isn't eager to bleed orange and green then we're better off learning that now.

Anybody troubled by the president of the university calling the kid or his family? Isn't that a little over the top? No wonder kids think they're special because they play football.

This report is total nonsense;
Everyday close to NSD programs pull offers and the prospect and the HS coach keep their mouths shut unless they want to embarrass the college. Colleges issue hundreds of offers for 20 - 30 spots. It is customary for to players to inform the leader silently and have their Clown-show on ESPN.
DK was steered away from daU because his coach was fired by the daU where Shannon got fired! Was he shopping around DK to Arkansas where Shannon is or to the highest bidder in Tallahassee? There is more to this than meets the eye. His coach rush to all the cane haters and told a one-sided story because he knows daU cannot discuss recruits in public.

It is a false rumor to let the hihgh school coach look good since he leaked the news ; he was let go by Miami when Golden came to town.

The step father probably realized that the High School Coach and others was shopping around the kid to the highest bidder so he called the school to get clarity

Pulling of offers are normal but most go unreported. Would you tell the world that one of the Big 3 pull your offer unless there other things in play. Golden suspect foul play so he force the issue. The Hihg School coach lost his job when Golden came to town and it look like he was not letting this guy go to Miami and the step father was worried he wanted him to go to Miami - this report is incorrect in every statement

Hey, don't drag FSU through the mud just because Mr. Golden screwed the pooch. "Highest bidder in Tallahassee?" Got any kind of proof, or even a reasonable RUMOR, to back that up?
Jealousy is an UGLY thing.

Yeah, I would think the President of a major university would have more important things to do than stroke the ego of an 18 year old kid.
The saddest part of all may be that it didn't even WORK!
