08:10 AM ET 02.04 | From his perspective, Smith College professor of economics Andrew Zimbalist sees something different. [Zimbalist], in a podcast interview with Kirk Minihane to discuss the portrayal of Red Sox owners in "Francona: The Red Sox Years," suggested that the book (co-authored by former Red Sox manager Terry Francona and Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy) offered a dramatic misrepresentation of the strong work done by Sox owners during their almost 11 years in charge of the team. "I felt like a lot of the book engages in these kinds of petty accusations." ... Zimbalist added that the notion that the team's owners do not love the game was also misleading. "I think they're all really smart. And I think they all really do love baseball."

Somebody needs to explain why Prof. Zimbalist's opinion means the slightest thing.

Didn't he used to star on the TV show F. B. I.?

I thought that was Hawaii 5-0, but I didn't watch either show. Ephraim Zimbalist Jr. was tied with Engelbert Humperdinck for my favorite name from those times.

How about Slim Pickens?

I went to college with a guy named Dane Dearlove, and another one named Dean Darling.

No ****, not making it up.

I went to college with a guy named Merle Hamburger, and he looked like he ate plenty of them.

Was he a Jimmy Buffet fan?

Mr. Zimbalist is a bit late to the party, I said this two weeks ago. The books is a hatchet job on the Sox ownership and it was destined to be one the second Shaughnessy was signed on to do the writing. That red headed chipmunk has been pissed at the Sox owners ever since they won the first WS in 2004 since that victory relegated his insipid "Curse" book to the clearance rack.

I'd much prefer it if the name "Shaughnessy" was permanently replaced by "CHB" (Curly Headed Boyfriend, Crazy Carl's permanent legacy to the fans of the Bosox).

I'll do my best from now on.

Exactly! He must be friend or one of the many "consultants" Henry, Werner, and Lucchino brought on board.Ironically, I am reading this book right now. I think the book demonstrates how the "new" ownership group changed the culture of the organization, invested in technology, and started using data. In short, stepped into the 21st Century. What the book also had shown so far after about 350 pages, is after the WS wins ownership became more concerned with the Red Sox Brand rather than the model that lead to those titles. In 2011 the ownership group spent 100,000 on a study to determine what fans wanted and produced the following:1) Female fans want more attractive players to maintain their interest2) Team seems to want to invest in pitching and defense3) Team, inspite of emphasis on pitching and defense, is not following through with itWerner especially, due to his television background, was worried about the decline in tv ratings for Red Sox games. One tastey nugget I found really funny was before the 2011 season, Lucchino wanted to move the bullpens closer citing safety reasons. Because Fenway is a national landmark they have to have approval for any construction and rennovations. When they went to the board one member noticed this plan also involved adding 400 seats and said no. Afterward, Lucchino said he thought the players would be okay

Does the book say anything about how Dan Duquette basically built the 2004 Red Sox?

I think the CHB himself is Boston's new curse.

He and Bob Ryan have been making the Globb sports pages unreadable for 30+ years. Couple of dooosh nozzles.
