Babcock calls out third- and fourth-liners

08:22 AM ET 02.04 | If the supporting cast in Detroit wasn't already feeling some heat, coach Mike Babcock turned it up on Sunday. Daniel Cleary, Justin Abdelkader, Drew Miller, Cory Emmerton and Jordin Tootoo have combined for no goals and one assist for the Red Wings in eight games. Having the third and fourth lines devoid of offensive contributions puts more pressure on the top-two lines to produce. It hasn't helped that third-line center Darren Helm has been missing for seven of those games. "We need some balance, some support," [Babcock] said. "I think the whole group there, six guys, has got one assist. I mean, c'mon." Cleary was at a loss to explain why the third and fourth lines have been unproductive. "Gotta be better," Cleary said.

Can't really argue with that 1pt after 8 games on the 3rd and 4th line is not enough

One thing that might help the 3rd & 4th lines get on the score sheet is if Babcock scratches Tootoo. Those lines are rarely on the ice because Tootoo spends far too much time in the box.

Personally, I'd like to see Gustav Nyquist in the lineup against Calgary and Edmonton this week.

exactly...playing on the PK so often hurts in a lot of ways, and this is certainly one of them

Really Tootoo is doing exactly what they brought him in to do...agitation and scrums... he's got what....24 or 25 PIM and two of those are fighting majors.. Kronwall Franzen and Cleary all are double digits from 14-20 PIM. The whole team has been bad...you can't blame it on Tootoo.

Right, we can't blame it all on Tootoo, but he is the biggest offender and he doesn't offer much scoring punch anyway. If Babcock wants more offensive productivity from his bottom two lines, I think the Wings can better achieve that against Calgary and Edmonton if there's a puck possession winger in the lineup instead of an agitator. Tootoo should be in the lineup vs the Blues though.

Great franchise, and a great coach.

Even if they have their problems this year, and need to do a tad bit of rebuilding, etc, They will bounce back shortly. I have no doubt.

He might want to adjust the PowerPlay, which I haven't seen any yet. Still my team to follow.

"Babcock calls out third- and fourth-liners"

From what everyone's been saying, that's all the Red Wings have this year.

Probably the girls, although I wouldn't call the Senate big time.

No, I think the Monster Syndrome is to allow many goals :)
