03:09 PM ET 02.04 | Chris Jones, a five-star recruit committed to Mississippi State, told an ESPN reporter that he received death threats now that he's considering Ole Miss.

Jones, a defensive lineman from Houston, Mississippi, could cross lines in the Egg Bowl rivalry, taking visits to the Ole Miss after months of committal to the Bulldogs. He said the response from fans included death threats, although he has previously earned a reputation for lying to reporters about his recruitment process, telling reporters he was not visiting the campus in Oxford. Although the 6-foot-5, 250-pounder is still committed to Mississippi State, he could change his mind after what he termed "a crazy weekend".

Good grief either freeze is one heck of a recruiter or they are just giving the NCAA the finger

February 4, 2013  04:24 PM ET

Come to Tennessee, lad. You'll have the best time of your life.

February 4, 2013  05:11 PM ET

Death threats? Recruiting has gotten way out of hand.

Obviously, Freeze has mastered the SEC Coaches Handbook to Cheating, especially the chapter on recruiting.

All kidding aside, I think we are witnessing a "herd mentality" amongst many of these young men.

Sparty, I don't post much on here but I read SI.com regularly. I must ask you, what proof do you have that he is cheating? Freeze was on Orgeron's staff here, and though Orgeron couldn't coach himself out of a wet paper bag, that man can recruit. That is evidenced by Houston Nutt being able to have back to back 10 win seasons and Cotton Bowl victories.

If Freeze cheating is so "obvious" to you, then I would imagine Ole Miss would already be in trouble with the NCAA for major violations. This is not the case. All big time coaches have to get their start on the big stage somewhere. Hopefully this is his. Hotty Toddy!

It's the former dude. The overwhelming theme the recruits keep talking about is how much of a family the team and fan base feel like in Oxford, MS. I am from Oxford, and live an breath Ole Miss football, for better or worse. Freeze is legit, and if he keeps up what he has done so far, he will be an Ole Miss legend quicker than anyone expected. Also, Freeze is from north Mississippi, and has expressed publicly that this is his dream job. If he can get Ole Miss competing for SEC titles, I assure you he won't have to worry about being underpaid as a coach with our alumni. Same as other schools, they will find the money for him somewhere lol.

Reb, DS was joking. Kind-of. That's why he replied to his own comment "all kidding aside".

I'll take your word for it that freeze is just an awesome recruiter but you must understand it's going to raise some eyebrows.

February 4, 2013  08:37 PM ET

PDX, I get that it will raise some eyebrows, and it should. Just saying people should not jump to the conclusion that there is something illegal going on without any proof. The only thing coming close to proof was Treadwell posting the pic of around $300 on twitter, and if that is what it costs to get the #1 player at his position, then that is a steal lol. When I was his age, I could easily get that much money b/c I didn't have things like a car note, credit card debt, etc.

Just trying to say that the right person can succeed at Ole Miss without cheating, and I believe that person is Freeze.

Freeze will be at Texas or Oklahoma or Tennessee or some other bigger fan base/paycheck university in 2 years anyway. Hope this class gets good fast.

I have to disagree. He has said that Ole Miss is his dream job, and is from North Mississippi, so there is no reason to think that he would leave unless he was mistreated. As for the money, I assure you, if he has Ole Miss competing for the SEC title, money won't be an issue. Alumni like Fred Smith will get together and make sure it isn't.

Good one. I was trying to work Bevo into it, but was too tired to be clever.

You maybe right. Who better to hand over a few bucks than your family.

"We are family
I got all my sisters with me
We are family
Get up ev'rybody and sing

Ev'ryone can see we're together
As we walk on by
(FLY!) and we fly just like birds of a feather
I won't tell no lie
(ALL!) all of the people around us they say
Can they be that close
Just let me state for the record
We're giving love in a family dose

We are family
I got all my sisters with me
We are family
Get up ev'rybody and sing

Living life is fun and we've just begun
To get our share of the world's delights
(HIGH!) high hopes we have for the future
And our goal's in sight
(WE!) no we don't get depressed
Here's what we call our golden rule
Have faith in you and the things you do
You won't go wrong
This is our family Jewel"
