Will Mike Rupp trade soil Fletcher's perfect reputation?

07:38 PM ET 02.04 | The Minnesota Wild are getting serious about making a Stanley Cup run this year and for the next few years. After signing big name free agents Zach Parise and Ryan Suter before the lockout, the Wild have moved a pair of forwards to the New York Rangers in exchange for rough and tough defenseman Mike Rupp. Some are saying the Wild may be panicking a bit too early with this trade. The Wild sent forwards Nick Palmieri and Darroll Powe to the Rangers to net Rupp, and while Minnesota has plenty of forwards they can plug in all over the ice, losing Powe means losing depth and losing Palmieri means losing a great prospect. General manager Chuck Fletcher has earned the right to be daring in the moves he makes, but it doesn't take many bad moves to ruin your reputation and find yourself on the hot seat with fans.

I love that the guy who wrote this is willing to unequivocably pronounce that spending a king's ransom on two very good, but not top players was a success beyond reproach. Somehow, getting rid of Powe (career best 17 points) and some guy (a third round pick in 2007, now on his thrid team) in exchange for a bruiser...that's suspect. As far as I see it, it's a lateral move that will have no actual bearing on whether or not this team does anything.
At the moment the Wild are in a 4 horse race for the division. This can really go any way...but at least for this year, I see them being 3rd best in the division. Considering the cost, the focus is definitely being put in the wrong place.

Powe is good skater who can kill penalties ...two things Rupp couldn't do....and with absence of Callahan I think this a good move by the Rangers...They also called up J.T.Miller and Brendon Mashinter.....

Oil and water. I don,t htink Fletcher thought that he was getting Powe v.2.0.
He went out to acquire a goon, and he gave up a piece that he feels is expendable. If it works out for NY, great for them. And if it works out for the Wild, great. But I don't see how this move determines anything in terms of Fletcher's failure or success, as the article alludes to.

Fletcher doesn't need Mike Rupp's help to soil his reputation. He's done an admirable job all by himself when he signed Suter and Parise to 29 year contacts.
