08:05 AM ET 02.05 | Down the stretch they come -- to the trade deadline, that is, which forces teams to decide whether to push for the playoffs or look to some degree toward the future. Keep an eye on Dallas, as rival executives believe the Mavericks will look to unload some of their older money if they keep losing (aka Shawn Marion, who is owed $9.3 million in the last year of his deal in 2013-14, or Vince Carter, who is owed $3.1 million in the last year of his deal in 2013-14). Dallas has lost 18 of its past 27 games and starts a five-game homestand on Wednesday that includes Portland, Golden State, Atlanta, Sacramento, and Orlando.

still don't know why the Mavs didn't keep Tyson Chandler. Cuban has made some odd moves since they won the title.

The Mavs were finished. Cuban new it. He rolled the dice in an effort to secure a competative franchise for the next 10 years...his only real option and failed. I don't fault him for trying. W/ Chandler, Berrera, and Terry the Mavs would be a playoff team, but they would not have repeated and they would not be title contenders...esp 4 years from now. I guess the question is would you rather go to the playoffs every year for the next 4 years w/o any hope of a title, or would you risk it all to get a superstar (or superstars) that will make you a better team and ensure your competativeness for the next 10 years. I think it was a no brainer. It is still tought to swallow though.

They are cooked....time to rebuild, why didnt he explore picking up Rudy Gay? Move Shawn Marion and VC before this time? Will he continue to build around Dirk?

They might as well keep them because it is doubtful that the Mavs will take what the rest of the league has to offer. They certainly do not want any additional salary which most teams during the trade deadline would certainly look to unload. dallas should just simply tank the season in hopes of getting a top five pick.
