Will Mets prohibit Santana from WBC?

08:11 AM ET 02.05 | Now more than two years removed from shoulder surgery, Johan Santana has been working out with the intention of joining Team Venezuela for next month's World Baseball Classic. [The] Mets plan to treat him like any other pitcher this spring. But insurance obstacles could prove prohibitive in his quest to compete on an international stage. Because Santana finished last season on the disabled list, the Classic must be willing to insure the $31 million remaining on his contract for him to compete. Even if Santana clears that hurdle, the Mets could ask him not to participate, as many teams do for older players -- particularly for pitchers, and certainly for pitchers with his recent history of arm trouble.

Of course they should keep him out - no reason to say yes unless he agrees to amend his contract - which the MLBPA won't let him do. He is being paid as an ace - he was out last year - mid 30's - this is like asking do the astro's stink - very easy to answer

wiseup: Santana has not been the same pitcher since his manager let him throw 145 pitches while throwing his no hitter. Since then his velocity dropped off and has had time on DL.
