The decade's most overrated recruit

08:15 AM ET 02.05 | Among a list that includes such under-performers as running backs Bryce Brown and Darrell Scott, linebacker Willie Williams and WR/RB Whitney Lewis, quarterback Ben Olson stands perhaps head and shoulders above the rest. The statuesque Olson was a five-star prospect out of Thousand Oaks (Calif.) high in 2002 and rated the No. 4 overall prospect by Rivals.com. He enrolled at BYU, then went on a two-year Mormon mission before landing at UCLA, where he was hailed by some delusional fans as "Southpaw Jesus." Olson was no savior, however, as he threw 12 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in three injury-plagued seasons for the Bruins. He was undrafted by the NFL.

I guess he's so overrated that the interns couldn't even find a picture of hiim for the story.

This is part of what is wrong with today's sports landscape.
Players were 17-18 years old when they were "ranked" ... by a commercial venture that only cares about making money from sales of subscriptions. So what if these kids didn't "live up to it"?

The mods are apparently sensitive on the words we use for those who are spawn of Cheech and Chong. Not to mention having relations with women.

Why no picture of Olsen, if he is indeed the biggest college flop? Oh, I have no objection to the picture of also-ran, Bryce Brown (a male-reproductive-organ cranium), but the blurb concludes that Olsen cast the biggest loser shadow. A sports publication that cannot obtain a pic of Olsen isn't believable.

Wrong decade. Now you're venturing into Ryan Leaf territory. Scary.

Oops. Need to correct myself there. Leaf did well in college, but was probably the biggest NFL flop of the time. My apologies to Mr. Leaf.

I think someone is gonna give that kid a chance off measurables alone, can't say what he will do with it. Kid might need a heart transplant.

Honestly, how many of us would like to be "rated for live" based upon our 17 or 18 year old selves? The whole process is screwed up, but it's what we have. Dallas took Ed "too tall" Jones, even though he was clearly "too tall" and yet he turned out to be a decent player. Steve Largent was "too slow." Those were guys who had college ball under their belt, and were at least 21 or so at the time of the pro draft. Even those four years probably aren't enough. At 64, I'd rather be judged by the whole body of my work, and not what I was like when I was 18. I think I've changed a bit over those years. I'm pretty sure I matured some.
