03:30 PM ET 02.05 | Auburn University announced on Friday that the famous oak trees at Toomer's Corner will be removed. The trees were poisoned in 2011, and Harvey Updyke will go to trial for that in April. The university said that efforts made to keep the trees alive or restore them to health have failed, and that they must be removed. No date has been set as for when they will be taken out, or how they will be taken out. A party is planned for April 20th so students and locals can enjoy a final party with the trees.

When I was in college many years ago, I worked a summer job at a very small college in West Virginia....We put a new slate roof on a large admin building. Rather than destroy the old slate shingles, the college collected them and sold them to alumni for something like $100 a pop. Guessing if these trees were cut into small logs, they could fetch upwards of $2000 a pop from Auburn alums.
