Shootout unfairly favors one conference

08:18 AM ET 02.06 | It's no wonder that at least one Western Conference team is coaching shootouts. Of the first 127 games played this season through Monday, 30 went to overtime and 18 were decided by shootouts. That's roughly in line with the historical average. But what's different is how the vast majority of the "loser" points -- 21 as compared to nine -- were "earned" by teams playing in Western Conference. ... [In] the first 17 days of the season, there were 12 additional points awarded in the Western Conference, which is going to make it even harder for the early bottom feeders to make up ground as the season moves along. After all, there is no interconference play this year -- and the divide between West and East is particularly acute when it comes to shootouts.

Personally, I think the NHL should do what European teams do with the OT/SO wins.
Three points for a regulation win. Two points for an OT/SO win, one point for an OT/SO loss. Nothing for a regulation loss.

As a Preds fan, we have had our share of SO's this year already..change the rules if this is a disadvantage to anyone.....at least we found our offense last night against the Blues...and this article is totally useless info....

how dies it unfairly favor one conference? The fact that they go to shootouts more often doesn't 'favor' them. This guy should invest in a thesaurus or something, because it's clear what he meant to say, but the way it came is really a reach.

agreed. but they won't change it. ever. it gives the impression of parity and it keeps more teams in the hunt for much longer.

agree....team game stops and skill competion starts........has nothing to do with how a "team" can play...win as a team....lose as a team....or tie....no shootouts........

Testify ! Hockey games should be decided playing hockey. Imagine a boxing match going 12 rounds and a split decision means both fighters drop and see who can do the most sit ups .
